Father of RG Kar Victim Questions CBI After Sandip Ghosh Receives SC Bail

The CSR Journal Magazine

The father of the doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata has expressed concerns regarding the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) following the Supreme Court’s decision to grant bail to Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the hospital. He stated that the agency must be held accountable for its actions, highlighting the need for transparency in the investigation process.

This statement comes after the Supreme Court granted Ghosh bail on Thursday, 4 October 2024, in a case related to alleged financial irregularities at the hospital. The father’s remarks were made on Saturday, October 6, 2024, amidst ongoing public discontent regarding the handling of the case.

The victim’s father questioned how the CBI could maintain public trust if it exhibited such shortcomings, especially when it is an agency relied upon by a population of 147 crore. He emphasised that while the government could not be directly blamed, the CBI’s independence should not exempt it from scrutiny.

Reactions from the Medical Community

The Supreme Court’s ruling has drawn significant criticism from medical professionals advocating for justice for the victim. Dr Utpal Bandyopadhyay, a leading figure in the movement, has called for the CBI to publicly clarify the reasons behind the delays in the investigation. He expressed that the bail decision has led to feelings of disappointment and anger among those seeking justice.

Dr Bandyopadhyay also urged for the trial to be expedited through a fast-track court, highlighting the need for swift action against all individuals allegedly involved in the crime and in fostering a corrupt environment within the state health department. His comments reflect a broader sentiment among the medical community regarding the urgency of the case.

Another prominent activist, Dr Aniket Mahato, voiced his distress over the Supreme Court’s decision. He noted that many who had actively protested for justice felt disheartened by the judicial outcome. Dr Mahato raised concerns about the CBI’s investigation, alleging that despite listing 147 witnesses, only seven had been examined over the past two years, which he argued undermines the integrity of the case.

Legal Proceedings and Implications

Sandip Ghosh had approached the Supreme Court after a special CBI court denied his bail requests and the Calcutta High Court dismissed his petition. In December 2024, a Sealdah court granted him bail in the rape and murder case, citing the CBI’s failure to file a chargesheet within the required 90-day timeframe. However, he continued to remain in custody due to the financial irregularities case.

The Supreme Court’s recent decision to grant Ghosh bail has raised further questions about the CBI’s management of the investigation. The victim’s father and members of the medical community have called for a reassessment of the CBI’s approach to ensure that justice is served in a timely manner.

The ongoing situation underscores the complexities involved in high-profile cases and the necessity for thorough investigations. The developments have sparked a renewed focus on the need for accountability within investigative agencies, as well as the importance of public confidence in the justice system.
