Kolkata: TMC Leaders Submit Nominations for Rajya Sabha 2026 Elections

In Kolkata, on March 5, members of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) officially filed their nominations for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for 2026. The candidates include Koel Mallick, Menaka Guruswamy, Rajeev Kumar, and Babul Supriyo, highlighting the party’s strategic choices for the biennial elections. Simultaneously, Rahul Sinha, the Rajya Sabha candidate for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), arrived at the West Bengal Assembly to submit his nomination. Sinha remarked on March 4 that the BJP has demonstrated its commitment to its party workers, reinforcing the belief that every member is valued within the party structure. He emphasized a collective effort for the welfare and improvement of Bengal.

Profiles of TMC Candidates

The candidates introduced by Trinamool Congress include former Union Minister Babul Supriyo, who currently holds the position of Cabinet Minister for Information Technology and Electronics in the West Bengal government. Rajeev Kumar, who served as the former Director General of Police in West Bengal, is also among the nominees. Additionally, Menaka Guruswamy, a senior advocate recognized for her expertise in constitutional law, and Koel Mallick, a prominent actress in the Bengali film industry, have been nominated as well.

Election Schedule and Details

The polling for the biennial Rajya Sabha elections, aimed at filling 37 seats across ten states, is set for March 16. The votes will be counted on the same day, with the results expected to be announced at 5 PM. The current terms of 37 members elected from states including Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Telangana are set to conclude in April, creating vacancies that the upcoming elections will address.

Nomination Process Timeline

The last date for filing nominations for the elections was March 5, followed by scrutiny of the candidates on March 6. Candidates have until March 9 to withdraw their nominations if they choose to do so. This timeline is essential for ensuring a smooth election process as the deadlines approach.
