Kim Jong Un’s Daughter Seen As Successor-Designate, South Korea Intelligence Says

The CSR Journal Magazine

South Korea’s National Intelligence Service has assessed that the teenage daughter of North Korean leader Kim Jong Unis effectively being positioned as his successor, potentially extending the Kim family’s dynastic rule into a fourth generation. Lawmakers revealed the assessment on Thursday following a closed-door parliamentary briefing.

The development comes ahead of a major congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea later this month, where Kim Jong Un is expected to outline policy priorities for the next five years and further consolidate his authority.

Intelligence Shift From Training To Successor-Designate

According to lawmaker Lee Seong-kweun, the NIS described Kim’s daughter, widely believed to be Kim Ju Ae, as having reached a “successor-designate stage.” The agency had previously characterised her position as part of “successor training.”

Lee said the terminology shift is significant. Moving from training to successor-designate suggests that Pyongyang may be edging closer to formalising a succession plan, even if subtly.

Kim Ju Ae is believed to be around 13 years old. North Korean state media have not officially confirmed her name, referring to her instead as Kim’s “respected” or “most beloved” child.

Increasing Public Visibility And Symbolic Appearances

Kim Ju Ae first appeared publicly in November 2022 at a long-range missile test. Since then, she has accompanied her father to multiple high-profile events, including weapons launches, military parades, factory visits and a summit in Beijing with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

In January, she joined her parents at the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, where the embalmed bodies of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il are housed. The visit was widely interpreted as symbolic, reinforcing her connection to the ruling lineage.

The NIS reportedly told lawmakers that her participation in military events, the Kumsusan visit and indications that Kim Jong Un may be seeking her input on certain matters contributed to the reassessment.

Workers Party Congress May Offer Clues

The upcoming party congress is expected to be closely watched for signs of succession planning. Analysts suggest that even if no formal announcement is made, messaging around revolutionary continuity and inheritance could indicate intent.

Some observers have speculated she could be elevated within the party hierarchy, although party rules require members to be at least 18 years old for certain formal posts. Intelligence officials said they will monitor her presence and protocol status at the congress for further signals.

Dynastic Legacy And Unanswered Questions

North Korea has been ruled exclusively by male members of the Kim family since 1948, beginning with Kim Il Sung, followed by Kim Jong Il and now Kim Jong Un. Kim himself was officially designated heir in 2010 and assumed power in 2011 after his father’s death.

If Kim Ju Ae is indeed being positioned as successor, it would represent a historic shift in the male-dominated leadership structure of the isolated state.

However, analysts caution that succession politics in North Korea remain opaque. While her growing public prominence suggests preparation for future leadership, any formal transfer of power could still be years away.

For now, attention turns to the upcoming party congress, where subtle cues may offer the clearest indication yet of whether North Korea is preparing for a fourth-generation transition.
