The 27th World Knowledge Forum commenced on September 5 in Seoul, uniting international political figures, scientists, technology innovators, and business executives to explore how artificial intelligence (AI) is shaping the future of humanity. This three-day event is being held at The Shilla Seoul and Jangchung Arena, revolving around the theme, “The Promethean Moment: Architecting the Co-Intelligence Order.”

Former British Prime Minister David Cameron provided the keynote address, which set the tone for the discussions that followed. The forum featured contributions from renowned thinkers and policymakers, focusing on various aspects such as AI ethics, geopolitical dynamics, economic shifts, and the implications for human life.

Cho Jeong-sik, the Speaker of South Korea’s National Assembly, remarked on AI’s transformative potential, stating that it transcends technology and is fundamentally altering societal operations. However, he also expressed concerns about the ethical implications that accompany this rapid technological evolution, including job displacement and increased inequality.

AI’s Role And Ethical Dimensions Discussed

Cho emphasised the need for AI to enhance human capabilities rather than replace human jobs. He compared AI to the mythological fire of Prometheus, asserting that just as that fire advanced human civilisation, AI should serve to expand human potential. He noted that the progress of technology should be guided by principles of human dignity and coexistence.

Chang Dae-whan, Chairman of Maekyung Media Group, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the importance of expanding AI’s influence across society. He noted that historically, the true advantage lies not in invention alone but in how effectively technology is disseminated. His vision centres on creating an “AI Native Korea,” where citizens can engage with AI as naturally as they would their mother tongue.

Chang further clarified the concept of “Co-Intelligence,” suggesting that human and AI relationships must evolve to foster collaboration, allowing AI to aid human thinking within ethical boundaries established by society.

Focus On Leadership Amid Global Challenges

Cameron brought attention to what he termed a dual crisis characterised by growing global instability and domestic political polarisation. He pointed to the interconnectedness of these challenges, suggesting that instability in one area exacerbates issues in the other. He highlighted that political turmoil, economic fluctuation, uncontrolled migration, and social media influence contribute to a fracturing consensus, urging leaders to adopt a practical approach to these global dilemmas.

According to Cameron, the priorities of national and economic security are intertwined, as one cannot exist without the other. He encouraged countries to forge alliances based on shared values rather than mere interests, stating that such partnerships have a higher chance of enduring in the face of emerging geopolitical challenges.

Reflecting on South Korea’s extraordinary development, Cameron noted the country’s journey as a testament to the impact of deliberate political and economic choices. He underscored the significance of democracy, rule of law, and free enterprise as fundamental elements in shaping national identity and resilience.

AI As A Transformative Force For The Future

This year’s World Knowledge Forum has positioned artificial intelligence as a central topic, indicative of its increasing significance in driving change across various sectors—including the economy, governance, and national security. Organisers remarked that AI’s perception has evolved from a mere productivity tool to an essential engine of industrial transformation.

Drawing inspiration from the myth of Prometheus, AI is viewed as the “fire of the 21st century,” possessing the potential to revolutionise society while also posing substantial risks if mismanaged. Throughout the course of the forum, discussions will revolve around five critical themes: Power, Capital, Intelligence, Planet, and Humanity, aimed at harnessing AI’s transformative capabilities while aligning advancements with human values.

The 27th World Knowledge Forum aspires to foster a global dialogue on utilising AI to influence economies and societies positively. The underlying objective is to ensure that technological progress does not compromise human dignity and mutual coexistence as it increasingly integrates into our daily lives.
