Kharge Criticises Amit Shah at Goa Rally, Questions BJP’s Contribution to Freedom Struggle

The CSR Journal Magazine

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge delivered pointed criticism of Union Home Minister Amit Shah during a public rally in South Goa on August 18. He highlighted the gap in their political experiences by stating that he had entered the legislative assembly before Shah was born. This assertion aimed to establish a sense of political legitimacy and experience within the Congress party.

In his speech, Kharge questioned the contributions of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and RSS to the Indian freedom movement, labelling them as “anti-India” and “anti-religion”. His comments suggested that the BJP’s and RSS’s political narratives disregarded the efforts of historical figures dedicated to the struggle for independence.

Kharge further asserted that discussions around the Gandhi family were often used to deflect from key issues concerning patriotism and national integrity. His emphasis on historical contributions was aimed at reinforcing a narrative that positioned Congress as the primary political force regarding India’s fight for independence.

Accusations of Division Against BJP

The Congress leader did not hold back from accusing the ruling party of fostering division in the country rather than promoting unity. He claimed that the BJP’s political strategies were centred around creating chaos and unrest as a means of governance. In this context, he likened the actions of the BJP to “setting fire” to communal harmony, making the case for a united front against such tactics.

Kharge highlighted the sacrifices of prominent figures like Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, stating that their dedication to the independence movement has no parallel in contemporary politics. He pointed out that Nehru spent 14 years in prison for the cause, arguing that such contributions validate the Congress’s claim to patriotism compared to that of the BJP.

He further declared that true patriots advocate for unity and secularism, directly contrasting these values with what he deemed the BJP’s divisive policies. This theme of patriotism versus alleged betrayal formed a significant part of Kharge’s address, as he endeavoured to frame Congress as the political party rooted in genuine national pride.

Call for Unity Among Congress Workers

Shifting focus to Goa, Kharge urged voters to reject leaders who fail to honour their promises and instead exploit the electorate. He characterised the current government as one that engages in politics of deception, encouraging the public to see through such tactics. His remarks were imbued with a call to action for voters to reclaim their political agency.

Kharge expressed his conviction that Congress should be in power in Goa, given their previous electoral success. He emphasised the need for unity among Congress workers and urged them to coordinate their efforts at the grassroots level to convey a powerful message to their opponents.

He reiterated that unity would be key in countering the BJP’s actions and sustaining the Congress party’s relevance in Goa’s political landscape. In conclusion, Kharge called upon party members to work closely at the booth level, reinforcing a culture of solidarity within the party, thus signalling a renewed focus on grassroots mobilisation.

Current Status of Congress in Goa Assembly

As of now, the Congress party holds three of the 40 seats in the Goa Assembly, with Yuri Alemao serving as the Leader of the Opposition. The party had previously won 11 seats in the 2022 Assembly elections, but faced significant challenges when eight of its MLAs defected to the BJP, leaving the party to reconstruct its strategies in reclaiming lost ground.

This restructuring process and the recent rally in South Goa mark an important phase for the Congress as they aim to revitalise their standing in the state. The party’s leadership under Kharge is focused on fostering both resilience and unity among their members to navigate the political complexities posed by the ruling government.
