Kerala SSLC Exams in Gulf Delayed Due to Ongoing Middle East Conflict

The CSR Journal Magazine

Kerala Education Minister, V Sivankutty, announced on March 2 that the SSLC and Higher Secondary examinations scheduled to take place in Gulf centers have been postponed. The decision comes in light of escalating tensions in the Middle East, which have complicated exam arrangements in that region. The SSLC exam was planned for March 5, while the Higher Secondary exams were set for March 5, 6, and 7.

Concerns for Students Living in the Gulf

Minister Sivankutty expressed understanding regarding the anxiety students may be feeling due to their inability to reach examination centers. He emphasized that the Department of General Education is committed to supporting these students during this challenging time. He stated that the revised dates for the examinations will be provided at a later date as the situation develops.

Application Process for Affected Students

The Education Minister urged students who are impacted by travel restrictions to take immediate action by submitting applications through their class teachers or principals to the Director of General Education. He highlighted that each request will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, ensuring that decisions made are in the best interests of the students.

Background of the Current Situation

The announcement of the exam postponements coincides with an escalation of hostilities in the Middle East. Specifically, a joint military operation dubbed Operation Roaring Lion/Operation Epic Fury was conducted by Israel and the United States on February 28. This operation reportedly resulted in the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as confirmed by U.S. President Donald Trump and Iranian state media. Alongside Khamenei, several family members were also reportedly killed in the strikes.

Regional Impact and Reactions

In response to the military actions, Iran has declared a period of 40 days of public mourning for Khamenei. His leadership, which began in 1989 following the death of the Revolution’s founder, Ruhollah Khomeini, was characterized by strong opposition to Western influences. Following the strikes, Iran has reportedly conducted retaliatory actions targeting U.S. bases in various locations, including Dubai, Doha, Bahrain, and Kuwait, raising concerns over broader regional stability.

Transportation Disruptions

The military activities have led to disruptions in air travel, with numerous airlines canceling or diverting flights in and around the West Asian region. Moreover, an oil tanker was struck off the coast of Oman as tensions continue to escalate. This complex situation further highlights the difficulties faced by students wishing to return to their homes for examinations.
