Kerala Assembly Elections: BJP Promises Two Free LPG Cylinders Annually In Manifesto; Rahul Gandhi Alleges PM ‘Controlling’ CM

The CSR Journal Magazine

As the Keralam Assembly elections approach, political tensions have intensified, with leaders from various parties launching accusations against each other. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) recently published its manifesto, which outlines a blend of social welfare programs and infrastructure developments aimed at revitalizing Kerala’s economy. BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar described the manifesto as a “ground-up new vision,” which intends to propel the state towards a developed future.

The BJP’s manifesto includes key welfare initiatives, such as a monthly pension of Rs 3,000 for women, widows, and senior citizens over the age of 70. Each household in Keralam is promised 20,000 liters of free water monthly, along with the distribution of two LPG cylinders at no cost each year as part of the party’s outreach to assist poor families. The party has also proposed a “Bhakshya Arogya Suraksha” card to help needy women with expenses related to medications and groceries.

Focus on Infrastructure and Governance

In terms of infrastructure development, the BJP has committed to the establishment of an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Keralam and the creation of a high-speed railway network connecting Thiruvananthapuram and Kannur. The manifesto further highlights the importance of temple administration, particularly issues concerning Sabarimala.

BJP national president Nitin Nabin expressed confidence in the party’s electoral performance and invoked the “Modi guarantee,” claiming a strong history of fulfilling electoral promises. He indicated dissatisfaction with the governance of the state’s current parties, asserting that the BJP stands ready to present itself as a viable alternative in Keralam.

Rahul Gandhi’s Counterclaims

At a recent public rally in Kannur, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticized both the BJP and the Left Democratic Front (LDF), alleging a covert alliance between the two. He asserted that both parties abandoned their core ideologies to advance corporate interests. Gandhi accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of exerting control over Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan through the influence of central investigative agencies.

Gandhi proclaimed that while Congress publicly challenges Modi’s authority, the Kerala Chief Minister refrains from doing the same due to fear of repercussions. Adding to this, Congress leader KC Venugopal criticized the central government for neglecting the challenges faced by rubber farmers in the region, emphasizing the need for fair pricing of rubber. Farmers from Thiruvalla have raised alarms over plummeting prices and rising production costs, calling their economic circumstances dire.

Farming Crisis in the State

The plight of rubber farmers has become increasingly severe as expenses soar and market prices dwindle. Farmers expressed frustrations regarding labor shortages and unsustainable costs, emphasizing that promises made by political leaders often fade after elections. Many farmers have voiced skepticism about any commitments to raise rubber prices, asserting that past experiences have left them doubtful.

The upcoming Keralam Assembly elections are scheduled for April 9, with vote counting set for May 4. Historically, Keralam has alternated political power between the LDF and United Democratic Front (UDF) every five years since 1982. However, this cycle was disrupted in 2021 when the LDF successfully retained power for a second consecutive term. Despite the prevailing influence of the LDF and UDF, the BJP is keen to capitalize on its recent success in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation elections as it seeks a foothold in the state.
