JNU Students Protest Vice-Chancellor’s Remarks, Demand Resignation

The CSR Journal Magazine

Protests erupted at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi on February 24 following controversial comments made by Vice-Chancellor Shanti Shri Dhulipudi Pandit. Students gathered to voice their objections to Pandit’s allegations that UGC regulations were “irrational” and “unnecessary,” asserting that her statements carried casteist undertones.

The demonstrations took place in the wake of reports of violent clashes involving members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), who were accused of attacking student protestors late at night.

AISA Accuses Vice-Chancellor of Promoting Casteism

The All India Students Association (AISA) condemned the Vice-Chancellor’s remarks, saying they reflected a “Brahmanical” perspective. According to AISA, Pandit had previously expressed her pride in being associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which they allege aligns with her dismissive comments about marginalized communities. AISA urged for her resignation and a public apology, stating that “Dalits were drugged with ‘permanent victimhood,” which they argued perpetuates an unjust narrative.

Student March for Social Justice

In a coordinated effort to address the issues of caste-based discrimination in university settings, students conducted a ‘Samta March’ on February 22. Thousands of participants voiced their refusal to accept what they termed “the VC’s blatant casteism,” thereby reiterating demands for her immediate resignation. AISA highlighted the significance of the march as a collective rejection of divisive rhetoric in education.

Allegations of Violence by ABVP

During the protests, AISA reported that members of the ABVP employed violent tactics against demonstrators. Their claims indicate that ABVP members, described as “repeat offenders” and “notorious for their unruly behavior,” initiated violence against students gathered at the SL-SIS lawn. The harsh actions included throwing bricks and stones at protestors, marking a continuation of alleged hostility faced by students advocating for their rights.

Solidarity and Continued Demands

AISA expressed solidarity with both the protesting students and the rusticated JNU Student Union Office Bearers. They characterized the Vice-Chancellor’s actions and comments as part of a broader effort to undermine democratic representation at the university. The demands from AISA remain clear: the Vice-Chancellor should resign, ABVP members must be held accountable for their violent actions, and the unjust rustication of student leaders must be revoked. AISA aims to unite students against perceived casteist influences and strengthen the call for UGC Regulations that promote equality in educational institutions.
