A very chilling case of domestic violence that spiraled into mob justice has come to light from Jharkhand. Here, a man was lynched by enraged villagers. This comes after he allegedly murdered his wife during a heated altercation. The incident took place late Wednesday night in Lukaia village. The remote village is located under the Mufassil police station jurisdiction in Giridih district, Jharkhand.

Domestic Dispute Turns Deadly

According to reports, Chotelal Hansda, 30-years-old, had been married to 25-year-old Meena Murmu for the past eight years. However, the couple had been experiencing a strained relationship, prompting Meena to return to her parental home in Lukaia village. According to police reports, Chotelal arrived at her parents’ house late Wednesday night in an effort to bring her back.

Soon an argument broke out between the couple during his visit. In the heat of the moment, Chotelal allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed Meena multiple times. Meena died on the spot. The incident shocked her family members, who immediately raised an alarm in the locality.

Mob beats man to Death

It was too late as Chotelal attempted to flee the scene after the attack, till then the word of the murder quickly spread in the area. Furious villagers and members of Meena’s family chased him down the village.

They caught Chotelal, and assaulted him mercilessly. He sustained severe injuries and died on the spot before any medical help could arrive on the scene.

Police Response and Investigation

Following the incident, local police, including Sadar Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) n arrived on scene. Along with him Jeetwahan Orao Mufassil police station in-charge Shyam Kishore Mahto, reached the scene shortly after being alerted. Both bodies were recovered and sent to Sadar Hospital for post-mortem examinations.

“We are registering two separate FIRs one for the murder of Meena Murmu and the other for the lynching of Chotelal Hansda,” SDPO Oraon stated. Legal proceedings have been initiated against those involved in the mob attack.

“Meena was staying at her parents’ house recently. Her husband visited his in-laws’ home to bring her back. They had an altercation over an issue late Wednesday night, and Chotelal allegedly stabbed his wife to death,” SDPO Oraon said.

Shock and Mourning in the Village

“Chhotelal Hansda, who was trying to flee after murdering his wife, was caught and beaten to death by villagers. We are registering two separate FIRs in connection with the incident — one for the murder of Meena Hansda and the other for the lynching of Chhotelal Hansda,” SDPO Oraon said.

The double tragedy has triggered shock, anger, and mourning throughout Lukaia village. While the initial incident reflects a disturbing case of domestic violence, the retaliation by the mob raises serious questions about vigilantism and the erosion of legal process.
