Jasprit Bumrah Shifts Focus to ODIs Following T20 World Cup Victory

The CSR Journal Magazine

Indian pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah is set to give precedence to One Day Internationals (ODIs) after the national team’s recent success in the T20 World Cup. As preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup commence, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has indicated he may participate more in 50-over matches while placing lesser emphasis on bilateral T20I series to effectively manage his physical workload. This strategic shift follows India’s triumph in the T20 World Cup, where the focus has now turned towards their next major tournament in the ODI format.

Strategic Workload Management for Bumrah

A BCCI source emphasized that monitoring Bumrah’s workload is critical for India’s forthcoming plans. The source highlighted the importance of his fitness in any global campaign for the team. Given Bumrah’s established role as the leader of the bowling attack, he is expected to continue playing a vital part, particularly in Tests and ODIs as the team gears up for the 2027 tournament. The source noted that Bumrah would likely participate in approximately 30 to 35 games during the ODI cycle, underlining the necessity for careful management to avoid taking unnecessary risks.

Bumrah’s Recent Performance

During India’s T20 World Cup defence in 2026, Bumrah showcased exceptional skill, finishing as the tournament’s top wicket-taker with 14 dismissals at an impressive economy rate of 6.12. However, he has not featured in any ODI matches since India faced Australia in the 2023 ODI World Cup final. Due to ongoing issues with his back, Bumrah’s participation has been closely managed to ensure he remains fit for vital encounters.

Future Plans and Expectations

In 2025, Bumrah was absent from the ICC Champions Trophy due to a lower-back injury, leading the team to replace him with Harshit Rana. India’s cautious approach over recent years has focused on preserving Bumrah for key tournaments and significant Test matches. This approach is set to continue as they prepare for the upcoming ODI World Cup cycle.

Preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup

India’s preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup are likely to begin following the conclusion of the IPL season this year. Once the IPL wraps up, the national selection committee, alongside the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence and team management, will commence developing a long-term strategy. The planning discussions will involve head coach Gautam Gambhir, captain Shubman Gill, and VVS Laxman, the chief of the Centre of Excellence, to outline the next phase of India’s white-ball approach.

Focus on Test Matches and ODIs

While Bumrah may miss several T20I series, his participation in Test cricket and ODIs is expected to remain a priority. The pace attack for ODIs is anticipated to center around a core group that includes Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, and Harshit Rana once he achieves full fitness. Despite the shift toward ODIs, Bumrah is reportedly interested in participating in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where cricket will be contested in the T20 format. For the time being, India’s strategies center on keeping their pace leader in prime condition for the upcoming ODI World Cup.
