Jasprit Bumrah Reaches 500 International Wickets in T20 World Cup Semifinal

The CSR Journal Magazine

Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah reached a significant milestone by claiming his 500th international wicket, thus becoming the eighth player from India to achieve this feat. Bumrah attained this landmark during the T20 World Cup semifinal against England held at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The milestone wicket came from a cleverly executed slower ball that misled England captain Harry Brook, leading to a catch taken by Axar Patel at covers. Bumrah concluded his bowling spell with one wicket and conceded 33 runs over his four overs. So far in the tournament, he has taken a total of 10 wickets across seven matches, boasting his best bowling figures of 3 for 15 against South Africa.

In T20 World Cup history, Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh are tied for the highest wicket-taker for India, each having taken 36 wickets. Anil Kumble leads India’s overall wicket-takers with an impressive tally of 953 wickets in 401 matches, averaging 30.06. Kumble’s remarkable record includes 39 instances of taking four wickets, 37 five-wicket hauls, and eight ten-wicket matches, with best figures of 10 for 74. Among fast bowlers, the legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev ranks fourth overall, with 687 wickets in 356 appearances at an average of 28.83. His career highlights include 20 four-wicket hauls, 24 five-wicket hauls, and two ten-wicket matches, with best figures of 9 for 83.

India’s Performance in the Semifinal Match

In the semifinal matchup, India batted first and set a formidable total of 253 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their 20 overs. Sanju Samson delivered a stellar performance, scoring 89 runs from 42 deliveries, with contributions from Shivam Dube (43 runs from 25 balls), Ishan Kishan (39 runs from 18 balls), Hardik Pandya (27 runs from 12 balls), and Tilak Varma (21 runs from just seven balls). This aggressive batting display provided India with a substantial target against England.

England’s Response to India’s Total

Despite having England in a precarious position at 95 for 4, India could not seize complete control of the match. England’s Jacob Bethell played a remarkable innings, scoring 105 runs off 48 balls, supported by Will Jacks, who added 35 runs from 20 deliveries. Their partnership delivered a 77-run stand for the fifth wicket, which played a crucial role in England’s recovery. Bethell’s innings included eight fours and seven sixes. Jofra Archer also provided a brief but explosive contribution, scoring 19 runs in just four balls. England eventually finished their innings at 246 for 7, falling short of India’s total yet putting up a commendable fight.
