Jal Mahotsav Started in Lucknow’s Gosainganj, Targeting 22,000 Villages in Uttar Pradesh

The CSR Journal Magazine

The State Drinking Water and Sanitation Mission (SWSM) initiated a 15-day Jal Mahotsav on Sunday, aimed at transferring water supply responsibilities to gram panchayats in villages that have attained 100% piped water coverage under the Jal Jeevan Mission.

This initiative will continue until March 22 and will extend to over 22,000 villages across Uttar Pradesh. An event marking this occasion was hosted at the Hussainabad Doolahpur gram panchayat located in the Gosainganj area of Lucknow.

Inauguration and Ceremony Highlights

Mohanlalganj MLA Amresh Kumar officiated the launch by presenting a Jal Kalash to gram pradhan Harinaam. Officials reported that currently, 760 households in the Hussainabad Doolahpur Gram Panchayat are receiving tap water. During the event, Kumar emphasized the state government’s commitment to ensuring tap water accessibility for every household and highlighted the importance of water conservation among villagers.

Government Initiatives and Pipeline Expansion

Kumar stated, “The government has provided tap water to every home. Now, its conservation is your responsibility. Not a single drop of water should be wasted, and it is the responsibility of every resident to ensure that water reaches every needy person.” The MLA also took the opportunity to inspect the household water connections.

Dr. Rajshekhar, managing director of the Rural Water Supply Department, noted that approximately 11 kilometers of pipeline have been laid in the village to facilitate tap water supply to all households. He added that similar events are being arranged in other villages throughout the state.

Impact of the Jal Jeevan Mission

Prior to the implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission, rural Lucknow had around 25,000 tap connections, a figure that has since surged to 225,000. This significant increase reflects the state government’s efforts to enhance water accessibility. During the Jal Mahotsav, 42 gram pradhans from various districts, including Lucknow, Sitapur, Hardoi, Hamirpur, and Bareilly, were recognized for their contributions under the Jal Jeevan Mission.

Long-Term Water Management Strategies

Officials confirmed that the agency responsible for the Jal Jeevan Mission will oversee the operation, maintenance, and water quality monitoring for the next decade, ensuring that the newly implemented infrastructure remains functional and beneficial for the communities involved. The Jal Mahotsav is part of a broader government strategy to engage local bodies in sustaining water supply systems in rural areas.
