In anticipation of a planned march by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, Islamabad’s authorities have implemented a ban on public gatherings for two months. This decision follows the announcement of a protest aiming to demand the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is currently incarcerated. The march is scheduled for September 27, 2026, reflecting increasing tensions as the government ramps up security in the capital and surrounding areas.

The Islamabad administration has cited the enforcement of Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code, which prohibits assemblies of five or more individuals, as the legal basis for these restrictions. This ban extends to the high-security Red Zone of the city, a designation where protests have historically been closely monitored. Officials have also indicated that these prohibitions are in alignment with the Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Act of 2024. Violators may face legal consequences as per the regulations in force.

On September 18, Additional District Magistrate Anam Fatima issued an order that brought Section 144 into effect immediately, stating that this enforcement would persist for a two-month period. The decision underscores the government’s intent to maintain public order amidst rising protests.

PTI Plans March Amidst Rising Tensions

Imran Khan’s PTI has voiced plans for a significant long march to Islamabad as part of its efforts to advocate for the release of its party leader. Khan has faced multiple legal challenges and has been detained since 2023, and the party posits that the upcoming protest will simultaneously demand constitutional supremacy and adherence to the rule of law. Party officials have outlined their commitment to mobilising workers across the nation as they prepare for the significant event on September 27.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi announced on 24 September 2026, that the party would disclose a comprehensive strategy for the protest on September 25, indicating a proactive approach to garner support and organisation ahead of the march. This statement reflects the party’s resolve to address the turbulence surrounding Khan’s imprisonment and its implications for Pakistani democracy.

In addition to the PTI’s planned demonstrations, the Punjab government has also instituted Section 144 across the province. Measures include the requested deployment of Rangers in districts such as Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum, and Mianwali to assist local law enforcement in maintaining order as tensions rise in the lead-up to the march.

Security Concerns and Further Developments

As authorities heighten security measures, restrictions on mobile and internet services are set to be enforced in designated locations within Rawalpindi and Attock on the day of the march. The government is actively preparing to manage and restrict entry points into the capital, aiming to prevent potential mass protests from overwhelming the administrative structure of Islamabad.

Additionally, the Islamabad High Court, in a ruling dated September 14, has delineated strict parameters for political demonstrations, stating that no political entity or public office holder is permitted to obstruct roadways or utilise governmental resources during protests. This judicial directive aims to minimise disruptions associated with the anticipated political actions.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has publicly encouraged PTI’s leadership to reconsider their plans for the march, suggesting an awareness from the government of the potential consequences of heightened civil disobedience. In a related development, Kissan Ittehad, a farmers’ organisation, has also declared intentions to march on Islamabad to present their demands amidst ongoing agricultural distress.
