IndiGo Flight from Delhi to Manchester Returns Due to Airspace Restrictions

The CSR Journal Magazine

An IndiGo flight, designated 6E 033, traveling from Delhi to Manchester, was compelled to turn back after nearly eight hours of flight time. The flight returned due to unexpected airspace restrictions in West Asia, as confirmed by the airline. Prioritizing the safety of passengers, IndiGo cited “last-minute airspace restrictions” as the key reason for this decision. The airline will collaborate with relevant authorities to determine the feasibility of resuming the journey safely.

Flight Path and Duration

According to sources within IndiGo, the return was necessary because of the changing circumstances in the Middle East, which have prompted some flights to opt for longer, alternate routes. The 6E 033 flight initially took a route over Africa to circumvent conflict zones but made a U-turn near the border of Ethiopia and Eritrea, ultimately returning to Delhi. The aircraft landed around 2:30 PM, marking an extended travel time of 14 hours, culminating back where it started.

Other Airlines Adjust to Ongoing Unrest

Flight operations in the region remain precarious as airlines monitor the evolving security landscape. Indian carriers, including Akasa Air and SpiceJet, have announced plans to maintain and expand flight services to facilitate passenger travel between India and the Gulf region, adapting to disruptions arising from the ongoing conflict in West Asia and associated airspace limitations.

SpiceJet and Akasa Air Initiatives

SpiceJet has outlined plans to operate several special flights from Dubai to various Indian cities, ensuring enhanced connectivity for travelers affected by the current situation. Notable operations will take place on March 9 from Dubai to Pune, Mumbai, and Delhi, with additional services planned for March 11 to other destinations including Jaipur and Madurai. Passengers are advised to verify their flight status before heading to the airport due to potential schedule alterations.

Akasa Air’s Continued Operations

Following a thorough safety review, Akasa Air announced it would sustain selected flights connecting Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, with multiple Indian destinations until March 31, 2026. Connections will include Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Kochi, and Kozhikode, aiding travelers in their planning. However, flights to Abu Dhabi and Riyadh will remain suspended until March 11, while operations to and from Doha and Kuwait will be on hold until March 15.

International Airlines React to Regional Tensions

Regarding international travel, various airlines are modifying their operations as the situation continues to develop. SriLankan Airlines plans to resume daily services to Riyadh and Dubai in the coming days while remaining vigilant about security assessments. Gulf Air’s flights continue to be suspended due to ongoing restrictions in Bahrain’s airspace, with resumption contingent upon safety confirmations.

Oman Air Enhances Flight Services

Oman Air recently reported operating nearly 80 additional flights over the past week, assisting more than 97,000 passengers in returning home amid the disruptions. Most of its international network remains operational as scheduled, although some regional routes are still impacted by airspace closures. The airline is committed to maintaining frequent services where feasible to support passenger needs.

Escalating Tensions in West Asia

This situation has unfolded against a backdrop of rising tensions in West Asia, particularly following a military strike on Iran that resulted in multiple fatalities, including prominent political figures. The ensuing conflict has exacerbated regional instability, prompting airlines to reassess their operations continually based on safety criteria and available airspace.
