Guwahati’s ‘Naglok’ Theme Durga Puja Draws Record Crowd

The CSR Journal Magazine

Guwahati witnessed an unprecedented gathering of lakhs of devotees at the Bishnupur Sarbajanin Durga Puja pandal. This year marks the 76th celebration of the event, coinciding with the Platinum Jubilee that will be celebrated in 2026. The pandal’s unique theme, ‘Naglok’ or Kingdom of Serpents, has captivated the attention of attendees, drawing them to its intricate decorations and innovative design.

The pandal features an underwater-inspired aesthetic, prominently showcasing a Shivling nestled beneath a waterfall at its entrance. Additionally, meticulously crafted sculptures of Naag Devta enhance the visual appeal. Visitors have the opportunity to traverse the water-themed setting in specially arranged boats, leading them to the main puja pandal where the idol of Goddess Durga is displayed.

This innovative concept has resulted in a significant influx of visitors, many of whom have expressed their admiration for the elaborate decorations. Five-year-old Mridhusmita Pal, a Class II student, shared her joy after visiting the pandal, stating, “I felt very good, and this puja was also very good. We are so happy to see Naglok today. It has been made so beautifully. Inside, I saw Durga Maa, Naag and Cheel. I liked everything.”

Significance of the Naglok Theme

The choice of the Naglok theme was made to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee in a special manner, according to Piyush Kanti Dey, an adviser to the Bishnupur Durga Puja Committee. He explained that the theme aims to present traditional stories and divine forms associated with the serpent kingdom. “This year’s theme is Naglok. We have presented the divine forms associated with the Naag Devta through this concept. I have been involved with this puja for 76 years, and as we are celebrating our Platinum Jubilee, I wanted to introduce a special theme for the occasion,” Dey stated.

He further emphasised the committee’s commitment to innovation, stating, “We always try to bring something new and create an attraction that people have not experienced before.” This dedication to creativity has contributed to the pandal’s status as a major festive attraction in Guwahati.

In addition to the artistic elements, the committee has implemented various measures to manage the large crowds effectively. Volunteers and NCC cadets have been deployed throughout the area to assist visitors. Furthermore, CCTV cameras are being used to monitor the premises, ensuring a safe environment for all attendees.

Safety Measures and Visitor Experience

The Bishnupur Durga Puja Committee has taken significant steps to ensure the safety and comfort of its visitors during this festive season. Dey noted that special arrangements have been made to assist children, elderly visitors, and anyone requiring immediate help. The focus is on providing a smooth and safe experience for everyone attending the puja.

The 76th edition of the Bishnupur Sarbajanin Durga Puja has successfully combined elements of religious devotion, traditional mythology, and creative presentation through its distinctive Naglok theme. The event continues to attract large crowds, reinforcing its status as a key cultural celebration in the region.

As the festivities unfold, the Bishnupur Sarbajanin Durga Puja stands as a testament to the community’s dedication to preserving cultural traditions while embracing innovative concepts. The record turnout this year highlights the enduring appeal of the event and its significance in the local cultural landscape.
