Indian Railways Unveils Plan for 220 kmph Vande Bharat Express by 2027–28 to Boost Speed Travel

The CSR Journal Magazine

Following the successful introduction of the Vande Bharat Express, Indian Railways has announced its plans to manufacture next-generation trainsets capable of reaching speeds of 220 kmph. This initiative is seen as a significant advancement in the country’s efforts to enhance semi-high-speed rail travel.

The Railway Board has officially approved the production of two new trainsets under the Coach Production Programme, slated for the 2027–28 period. The manufacturing will take place at the Integral Coach Factory located in Chennai.

Specifications and Features of the New Trains

The forthcoming trains will feature a design speed of 220 kmph, with an anticipated maximum operational speed of 200 kmph. These improvements position the new trainsets closer to international semi-high-speed standards, providing a notable upgrade to current rail services.

Each of the two new trainsets will comprise 16 coaches designed for broad-gauge tracks. The production of these trainsets is indicative of Indian Railways’ commitment to improving efficiency and comfort in train travel across the nation.

Recently, in October 2024, the Integral Coach Factory awarded a contract to BEML for the designing and manufacturing of these high-speed trainsets. Initially, each train will include eight cars, with an estimated cost of Rs 27.86 crore per coach, leading to a total contract value of Rs 866.87 crore. This total also encompasses development, tooling, and testing facilities for future high-speed train projects.

Modern Features for Enhanced Passenger Comfort

The new 220 kmph trainsets are expected to come with a variety of modern amenities aimed at improving passenger experience. Features will include steel-body coaches, fully air-conditioned Chair Car setups, reclining seats, and advanced onboard systems.

Such modernisations are intended to make long-distance journeys more comfortable and enjoyable for passengers, facilitating the higher speeds that the new trainsets will achieve.

In addition to physical upgrades, the introduction of these next-generation trains aligns with Indian Railways’ long-term objective to modernise rail transport and improve safety and efficiency across its network.

Part of Broader Modernisation Efforts

The development of the new trainsets forms part of a broader initiative by Indian Railways to elevate train travel within the country. Currently, operational services are limited to speeds under 200 kmph, with the majority capped at around 160 kmph due to existing track constraints.

The upcoming introduction of high-speed test tracks and these new trainsets signals a clear trajectory towards more advanced travel options in the near future, aiming to enhance connectivity and reduce travel times across significant distances.

As Indian Railways embarks on this pivotal phase of modernisation, it seeks to address the evolving demands of travellers while positioning itself competitively in the realm of global rail transport.
