Indian Railways Operates Record 76,352 Special Trains in FY 2025-26, Daily Operations Reach 25,000 Trains

The CSR Journal Magazine

In the Lok Sabha, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw provided an overview of the operational achievements of Indian Railways for the fiscal year 2025-26. Emphasizing the significance of investment in railway infrastructure over the past decade, Vaishnaw noted that these developments primarily benefit the economically weaker sections, particularly the poor and middle class. He reported that a record number of 76,352 special trains were operated throughout the year, contributing to a daily average of 25,000 trains across the railway network.

Record Cargo Transportation Achieved

Additionally, the Railways reported a milestone in cargo transportation, moving 1,670 million metric tons of freight during the fiscal year. This figure represents an increase of 3.25 percent in freight loading compared to the preceding year. Among key commodities, iron ore transportation rose by 6.73 percent while cement saw a growth of 3.41 percent. These figures highlight the growing efficiency and capacity of the Indian Railways in cargo movement.

Safety Milestones Recorded

In terms of safety, the last fiscal year witnessed a significant achievement with only 16 consequential accidents reported, marking the lowest accident rates in five decades. This development is seen as a crucial step in enhancing the overall safety protocols within the railway sector.

Plan for Dedicated Passenger Holding Areas

Earlier in the week, Ashwini Vaishnaw, in his written statement to the Rajya Sabha, shared details of a comprehensive initiative aimed at creating dedicated passenger holding areas at 76 railway stations across India. These zones are equipped with modern amenities designed to alleviate congestion on platforms and provide passengers with comfortable waiting spaces. Features include accessible seating, clean drinking water facilities, sanitary restrooms, ticketing stations, informational displays, and enhanced security measures.

Model Holding Area Launched at New Delhi Station

A model passenger holding area has already been completed at the New Delhi Railway Station. This facility is expected to significantly improve passenger experience by reducing congestion. Modern conveniences include additional ticket counters, Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs), Public Address Systems, and electronic boards displaying train information. Further safety measures within the area feature closed-circuit television surveillance, luggage screening, door frame metal detectors, uninterrupted power supply, improved lighting, High Volume Low Speed fans, and fire safety systems. The area also offers Reverse Osmosis drinking water and distinct toilet facilities for men, women, and people with disabilities.
