The CSR Journal Magazine

On Sunday, the Congress party announced its first list of 284 candidates for the forthcoming West Bengal Assembly elections. Among the notable candidates are Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the former state unit president, running from Baharampur, and Mausam Noor, a former Trinamool Congress MP, contesting from Malatipur. The Congress has decided to field candidates independently for the entire 294 assembly constituencies in the state.

Details of the Candidate Selection Process

The candidate announcement closely followed an extensive discussion held by top Congress leaders regarding the election strategy. The meeting of the Central Election Committee (CEC) took place prior to the public unveiling of candidates. Key figures in attendance included Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, former president Rahul Gandhi, and K C Venugopal, the AICC general secretary for Organisation. Also present were various leaders from West Bengal along with Chowdhury.

Additional Candidates Representing Diverse Regions

Alongside Chowdhury and Noor, several other candidates have been designated for various constituencies. Madhap Rai will represent Darjeeling, Abdul Hannan is slated for Sujapur, Susmita Biswas will contest from Dum Dum, Gautam Bhattacharya will run from Diamond Harbour, Souvik Mukherjee is nominated for Asansol Dakshin, and Prasenjit Puitandi will contest from Asansol Uttar.

Party’s Commitment to Contest All Seats

Ghulam Ahmed Mir, AICC in-charge for West Bengal, noted that the party has received approximately 2,500 applications for the available seats. Mir stated that the Congress is determined to participate in all 294 assembly contests, emphasizing that this decision reflects the desires of the party’s grassroots supporters in the state. He assured that no constituency would remain unchallenged in these elections.

Election Schedule and Voting Details

The elections for the West Bengal Assembly are scheduled to take place in two phases, with voting set for April 23 and April 29. The counting of votes is planned for May 4. As the Congress finalizes its candidate list, the political landscape in West Bengal continues to evolve as parties prepare for an intense electoral battle.
