Indian Boxers Parveen and Ankush Advance to Asian Games Finals

The CSR Journal Magazine

Indian boxers Parveen Hooda and Ankush Panghal have successfully advanced to the boxing finals at the Asian Games 2026 following commendable performances in their respective semifinals. Parveen secured her place by defeating China’s Li Shu with a score of 5-0 in the women’s 65kg semifinal. This victory marks a significant milestone in her career, as she aims for gold in the upcoming final.

Ankush Panghal’s journey to the finals has also been noteworthy. He achieved a remarkable comeback against Uzbekistan’s Fazliddin Erkinboev, winning the men’s 80kg semifinal with a score of 4-1. Erkinboev, who is the reigning world champion in the 75kg category, posed a substantial challenge, but Ankush managed to reverse an initial deficit. Displaying resilience, he turned the tide after trailing 1-4 at the end of the first round, ultimately winning with a split decision.

This victory is particularly significant as Ankush becomes the first Indian male boxer to reach an Asian Games final since Amit Panghal secured gold in the 49kg category during the 2018 Jakarta Games. His performance underscores both his individual talent and the growing strength of Indian boxing on an international scale.

Parveen’s Strong Semifinal Performance

Parveen’s semifinal match showcased her strength and strategy, confirming her status as a formidable competitor. She commenced the bout by narrowly winning the first round 3-2, displaying controlled aggression and tactical acumen. The subsequent rounds saw her assert dominance, taking them both 5-0. This strong showing not only places her in contention for gold but also highlights her progression since the last Asian Games.

Having previously won a bronze medal at the last Asian Games held in Hangzhou, Parveen now looks poised to improve upon this record. She is set to face Chen Nien-chin from Chinese Taipei in the final, representing a critical opportunity for Parveen to secure her first Asian Games gold medal.

This achievement also positions Parveen among notable Indian women boxers, as she becomes only the third to reach an Asian Games final, joining the ranks of MC Mary Kom and Lovlina Borgohain. Such milestones contribute to an evolving legacy in Indian women’s boxing.

Narender Berwal’s Bronze Achievement

In a contrasting outcome, Narender Berwal competed in the men’s +90kg semifinal but was unable to secure a spot in the final. He faced Kazakhstan’s Aibek Oralbay, the current super heavyweight world champion, who outperformed him to win every round with a unanimous score of 5-0. Despite Narender’s efforts and determination, Oralbay’s powerful punches dominated the bout.

With this result, Narender adds another bronze medal to his collection, having also won bronze at the previous Asian Games in Hangzhou. His ongoing participation in international events continues to demonstrate his potential and skill within the sport.

The current boxing events at the Asian Games have proven fruitful for India, with a total of six boxing medals already achieved, surpassing the five medals obtained in the last edition. This success reflects the increasing competitiveness and calibre of Indian athletes in boxing on a prominent international stage.
