Indian Army Helicopters Land on National Highway 911 Near Pakistan Border in Rajasthan

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian Army utilised a segment of National Highway 911 near Dantour in Rajasthan as a provisional runway for military helicopters during a drill conducted on Tuesday, close to the India-Pakistan border. This operation coincided with the tenth anniversary of the surgical strikes executed by the Army across the Line of Control on the night of September 28–29, 2016. These strikes were a decisive response to a terrorist attack on an Army base in Uri that resulted in the deaths of 19 Indian soldiers.

Types of Helicopters Involved in the Drill

During the exercise, various helicopters, including Rudra, Dhruv, and Chetak models, successfully landed and took off from the designated highway stretch. The pilots practiced maneuvers of approaching and departing from an alternative location instead of a conventional airfield. This approach aims to enhance operational flexibility and preparedness in response to unforeseen circumstances.

The Dhruv helicopter is a twin-engine Advanced Light Helicopter, specifically designed and developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in India. The Rudra variant serves as an armed version, performing vital roles such as reconnaissance, escort, and fire support. The Chetak, also developed by HAL, is based on the French Alouette III design and is assembled in India under a licensing agreement.

This drill specifically tested the Army’s capacity to operate helicopters from an alternative site should an airbase, airfield, or helipad become inoperative. The location of Dantour within Rajasthan’s expansive desert landscape, characterised by vast distances and limited aviation infrastructure, provided an ideal environment for practising these essential procedures near the border.

Objective of the Helicopter Operations

The primary aim of the helicopter operations conducted during this drill was to validate the readiness of the Indian Army in executing aerial manoeuvres in non-traditional environments. By employing a highway as a makeshift runway, the Army demonstrated its adaptability and capability to conduct operations where established aviation facilities are not available.

The exercise highlighted the importance of maintaining operational readiness, especially in regions with challenging geographical conditions. The use of a highway for helicopter operations allowed the Army to simulate real-time scenarios where quick responses would be necessary in a potential conflict situation.

Coordination between air and ground teams was crucial during these operations, ensuring that safety and efficiency were upheld at all times. Ground teams were responsible for overseeing the movements at the landing site, thus facilitating seamless operations as helicopters engaged in take-offs and landings.

Significance of the Training Exercise

This training exercise holds significant importance for the Indian Army, particularly in enhancing combat readiness in border areas. The ability to operate in diverse environments is critical, given the strategic geographical features of the region. Conducting exercises such as this enables the Army to remain prepared for any contingencies that may arise.

Furthermore, the successful execution of helicopter operations on a national highway illustrates the Army’s commitment to employing innovative solutions in the field. This initiative also serves as a reminder of the ongoing vigilance required in safeguarding national security, especially in proximity to sensitive borders.

The operational success achieved during this drill underscores the potential for maximising available resources and improvising under varying circumstances, thus reinforcing the Indian Army’s capabilities in land and air synergy.
