Indian Army Enhances Artillery Capability with New Pinaka Regiment

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian Army has officially commissioned yet another regiment of the Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher, increasing the total number of these units to seven. This development is part of a strategic initiative to bolster artillery firepower along critical borders. The new regiments, recognized for their formidable strike capabilities, are stationed along the India-Pakistan frontier and the Line of Actual Control, thereby improving readiness in tense areas.

Future Expansion Plans

Defense officials have noted that an eighth regiment of the Pinaka system is being equipped, with plans for its induction by the end of this year. Furthermore, the military is considering the addition of two more regiments in the following year, which would raise the total count to ten. Over a longer timeline, the Army aims to deploy 22 regiments equipped with advanced and longer-range variants of the Pinaka system.

Modernization Following Geopolitical Tensions

This expansion comes in the aftermath of the Galwan Valley standoff in June 2020, which prompted the Army to accelerate its efforts in artillery modernization. Contracts worth approximately Rs 2,580 crore have been inked with several organizations, including Bharat Earth Movers Limited, Tata Power SED, now a segment of Tata Advanced Systems Ltd, and Larsen & Toubro for the establishment of six Pinaka regiments.

Advanced Capabilities of the Pinaka System

The Pinaka system, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), stands as India’s premier multi-barrel rocket launcher. Earlier versions were capable of striking targets at a distance of about 40 kilometers. In contrast, newer variants, including the Guided Pinaka and Long-Range Guided Rockets, possess an extended range of up to 90 kilometers, significantly enhancing the Army’s deep-strike capabilities.

Key Features of the Pinaka Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher

The Pinaka Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher is designed to operate in all weather conditions, delivering a high volume of fire over a brief period against critical targets. Each launcher is equipped with two pods, each containing six tubes, allowing it to fire a barrage of 12 rockets in merely 44 seconds. This rapid-response capability, coupled with high accuracy, enables the Army to effectively engage time-sensitive enemy positions, solidifying its role as a pivotal element of India’s evolving artillery strategy.
