The national capital of India is undergoing extensive preparations to host the BRICS Summit 2026 at Bharat Mandapam on September 12 and 13. The venue has been adorned with vibrant posters and illuminated installations to welcome the attendees. This high-profile event will see the participation of heads of state, foreign delegates, and prominent dignitaries representing member nations, partner countries, and outreach invitees.

India’s role as the host country is underscored by its chairmanship during this edition of the BRICS meetings, with the theme focusing on “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” This theme aims to guide discussions towards collaborative efforts and sustainable development across nations.

The BRICS alliance has evolved significantly since its inception as BRIC, which included Brazil, Russia, India, and China. The first Foreign Ministers’ meeting took place in New York in 2006, leading to the inaugural summit held in Yekaterinburg, Russia, in 2009. The grouping expanded to become BRICS with the inclusion of South Africa in 2011 and has further expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Indonesia in subsequent years.

Expected Attendance of Global Leaders

The summit is anticipated to see participation from several high-ranking officials, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, who will be making his second visit to India within a year, following a bilateral summit in December 2025. Prime Minister Narendra Modi reportedly extended this invitation personally during their meeting at the SCO summit in Bishkek on August 31.

Chinese President Xi Jinping is also expected to attend, though formal confirmation from China regarding his participation remains outstanding. If President Xi attends, it will mark his first visit to India since the informal summit in Mamallapuram in 2019, and a bilateral meeting with PM Modi is anticipated.

In addition to these leaders, other prominent attendees include South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. Furthermore, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul are expected to participate. The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres is also likely to be present, pending official confirmation.

Traffic Management and Summit Schedule

In preparation for the influx of global leaders, the Delhi Police have identified over thirty-five roads where traffic will be controlled or diverted. These measures will primarily impact central, southern, and nearby areas of Delhi, with temporary halts anticipated during the movement of VIP motorcades.

The schedule for the two-day summit commences on Saturday, September 12, 2026, with the arrival of BRICS leaders at the Bharat Mandapam. Following a closed session focused on “Inclusive Global Governance and Strengthening Multilateralism,” the leaders are set to attend the “Bharat Innovates Exhibition (Leaders of BRICS Member Countries).” This will be followed by a family photo session and a joint tree plantation ceremony on the outside lawns.

On the second day, Sunday, September 13, BRICS partner country leaders and outreach invitees will be welcomed, along with another family photo session. The session titled “Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability: Shaping the Future for Inclusive Global Growth” will then proceed in the Summit Hall, allowing participants to discuss crucial global issues and cooperation strategies.
