India Condemns Pakistan’s Airstrikes on Afghanistan During Ramadan

The CSR Journal Magazine

India has expressed strong disapproval of Pakistan’s airstrikes targeting Afghanistan, labeling them as a significant infringement of international law. During a recent Security Council meeting concerning the situation in Afghanistan, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Harish Parvathaneni, referred to the actions as “hypocritical.”

He criticized Pakistan for invoking Islamic principles while conducting military operations that resulted in civilian casualties during the holy month of Ramadan, noting that the airstrikes have killed 185 civilians, including a substantial number of women and children.

UN Data and Calls for Compliance

According to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), approximately 55 percent of the civilian casualties reported were women and children. Additionally, over 100,000 individuals have been displaced as a result of these attacks.

Ambassador Parvathaneni reaffirmed India’s support for UN Secretary-General António Guterres’s calls for adherence to international law and humanitarian principles, emphasizing the need for the protection of civilians in conflict zones.

Context of the Airstrikes

The airstrikes conducted by Pakistan emerged in late February, leading to significant casualties and injuries. Addressing these developments, Parvathaneni underscored India’s long-standing opposition to what he termed “trade and transit terrorism,” referring to the impediments posed to landlocked nations.

He emphasized that the vulnerabilities faced by such countries should not be exploited and termed these actions as contrary to the norms established by the World Trade Organization and the UN Charter.

Focus on Regional Terrorism

Parvathaneni remarked on the ongoing threat of terrorism, identifying it as a pressing global issue that necessitates coordinated international efforts. He pointed to groups such as ISIL and Al Qaida, including affiliates based in Pakistan, and stressed the need for comprehensive strategies to combat cross-border terrorism. Parvathaneni’s statements came as part of India’s commitment to addressing regional security concerns and respecting the sovereignty of Afghanistan.

India’s Humanitarian Efforts in Afghanistan

Following Pakistan’s actions, India responded by emphasizing its humanitarian initiatives aimed at supporting the Afghan populace. During the Security Council meeting, Parvathaneni highlighted India’s ongoing efforts in Afghanistan through a range of projects totaling over 500 development partnerships. These initiatives cover various sectors such as healthcare, public infrastructure, and capacity building, reflecting India’s long-term commitment to Afghanistan’s welfare.

International Health and Relief Contributions

In recent months, India has delivered more than one million immunization vaccines for children along with 9.5 tons of anti-cancer medicines. Future plans include an additional delivery of over 17 million doses of preventive vaccines to bolster Afghanistan’s immunization program. Over the past four and a half years, India has also contributed significant amounts of wheat, medical supplies, and food assistance to provide relief during natural disasters and support the healthcare sector.

Support for Afghan Sports and Culture

Amidst the challenges, Parvathaneni mentioned the cultural significance of sports, particularly cricket, in providing hope to Afghan youth. He noted the positive reception of the Afghanistan Cricket Team as they participate in international competitions, which fosters a sense of pride and joy among the Afghan people. This engagement in cultural events highlights India’s ongoing relationship with Afghanistan, serving both humanitarian and developmental goals.
