India has emerged as the leading supplier of smartphones to the United States, surpassing China for the first time. In the second quarter of 2025, phones made in India comprised 44% of all U.S. smartphone imports, compared to just 13% in Q2 2024. During the same period, China’s contribution dropped dramatically from 61% to 25%.
Apple Drives India to Become Largest Smartphone Supplier to the US
At the heart of this shift is Apple, which has fast-tracked production in India amid growing U.S.–China trade tensions. “India became the leading manufacturing hub for smartphones sold in the US for the very first time in Q2 2025, largely driven by Apple’s accelerated supply chain shift to India amid an uncertain trade landscape between the US and China,” said Sanyam Chaurasia, Principal Analyst at Canalys.
Apple now produces most of its iPhone 15 and 16 units in India destined for the U.S. market. While Pro models are still mainly made in China, the company has begun assembling some iPhone 16 Pro units in India. Other brands like Samsung and Motorola have also increased exports from India’s factories, but their volumes remain far smaller compared to Apple’s output.
India Growing as Key Smartphone Manufacturing Hub
This realignment reflects industry moves to reduce reliance on China. With rising tariffs and trade unpredictability, international smartphone companies are front-loading inventory and diversifying manufacturing locations to mitigate risk. Analysts note that India’s expanding role now includes not just budget devices, but increasingly high-end smartphones, too.
Despite India’s surge in exports, overall U.S. smartphone sales grew just 1% year-on-year in Q2 2025. Apple shipments fell 11%, while Samsung grew 38% and Motorola rose 2%. Smaller brands such as Google and TCL accounted for modest shares, with Google’s Pixel series showing a slight uplift.
India Emerges as Major Player in Global Smartphone Supply
India’s ascent in the U.S. smartphone market underscores its expanding importance in global electronics supply chains. From modest beginnings to now powering premium exports, the country’s manufacturing evolution signals a major shift in where tech giants source their products.
