Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has called on financially well-off individuals who pay income tax to voluntarily relinquish the benefit of 125 units of free electricity. This appeal was made during the two-day ‘Pataliputra National Youth Parliament-2.0’ event held on Sunday. Choudhary emphasised that such contributions would assist in the development of the state.

He highlighted that the state government allocates approximately Rs 23,000 crore annually on electricity subsidies, with an average expenditure ranging from Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000 per household. The chief minister’s request aims to encourage those who are financially capable to forgo this benefit for the greater good of Bihar’s progress.

Importance of Youth in Democracy

During his address, Choudhary underscored the essential role of youth in fortifying democracy and contributing to the construction of a developed India. He noted Bihar’s historical ties to democratic principles, asserting that it is vital for young people to lead efforts in preserving and enhancing these values.

The chief minister remarked that the sacrifices of freedom fighters led to India’s Independence in 1947, and as the nation nears the 80th anniversary of this milestone, it is crucial to reaffirm the commitment to democratic ideals. He stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is actively working towards making India a developed nation by 2047, while also acknowledging the significant contributions made by former Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar to the state’s growth.

Choudhary also recalled the pivotal role that youth played in the 1974 movement, suggesting that the current generation, including Gen Z and Gen Alpha, must similarly engage in reinforcing the democratic framework. He advocated for quality education and knowledge acquisition as fundamental pillars of success and prosperity.

Call for Annual Youth Parliament Organisation

In his address, the chief minister proposed the annual organisation of the youth parliament as a means to connect young individuals with democratic processes, constitutional values, and nation-building efforts. He believes that fostering this connection is vital for nurturing informed and responsible citizens who can contribute meaningfully to society.

The event was attended by notable figures including Education Minister Mithilesh Tiwari, MP Shambhavi Choudhary, and youth parliament founder Sayan Kunal, among others. Their presence underscored the importance of engaging youth in discussions about democracy and development.

Choudhary’s remarks resonate with a broader vision for the state and the nation, aiming to inspire the younger generation to take an active role in shaping their future. By encouraging voluntary contributions and participation in democratic processes, the chief minister seeks to cultivate a sense of responsibility and civic engagement among the youth of Bihar.
