IIT Bombay has reported the tragic death of a second-year student from the Department of Energy Science and Engineering, who died by suicide on the evening of September 15. The institution released a detailed statement regarding the circumstances leading to the incident. It was noted that earlier that day, during an examination, the student was found using a mobile phone in the exam hall. Allegedly, he had uploaded the examination question paper to ChatGPT in an attempt to obtain answers.

The IIT administration clarified that no disciplinary action was instigated against the student following the incident. After the discovery, the instructor and the Head of the Department discussed the matter with him, providing counsel and reassurance that this incident would not negatively impact his academic progress. Subsequently, the student returned to his hostel room where he was later found deceased.

Institution Offers Support Following the Incident

IIT Bombay expressed profound sorrow over the loss of the student and stated that it is extending support to fellow students, faculty members, and anyone affected by this devastating event. The institution confirmed that the relevant authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the student’s death to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the events leading up to the tragedy.

In response to the incident, a gathering of students held a late-night protest at the campus, articulating demands for accountability and greater transparency from the administration. Police presence was increased on campus to maintain order during the protest and facilitate constructive dialogue between the student body and the administration.

As the situation unfolded, DCP Dattatray Nalawade reported that the investigation into the case is currently ongoing. He clarified, “Today, a student died by suicide at IIT Powai. Following this, some IIT students congregated and initiated a protest concerning their demands. The IIT administration is conducting discussions with them to arrive at a mutually agreeable solution.”

Student Demands and Ongoing Dialogue

DCP Nalawade commented on the nature of the student demands, which appeared to relate to internal administrative matters that have been previously addressed by the IIT administration. He indicated that discussions were actively taking place to resolve these issues as they arose. While some protesters had chosen to disperse, others remained on site as dialogues continued between students and the administration.

Efforts to communicate effectively with the protesting students were ongoing, with the administration striving to resolve concerns and gain insight into the students’ grievances. The situation highlighted not just the immediate impact of the tragic loss but also broader issues that students felt needed to be addressed within the institution.
