The Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University) Varanasi has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Michigan, Ann Arbour, aimed at fostering collaborative research in electric mobility. This agreement was formalised on September 8, 2026, at the Electric Vehicle Centre located at the University of Michigan. The MoU was signed by Prof. Amit Patra, Director of IIT (BHU), and Prof. Todd Allen, Associate Dean for Research at the University of Michigan.

A high-level delegation from IIT (BHU), led by Prof. Amit Patra, visited the University of Michigan’s Electric Vehicle Centre as part of the formalisation process. The meeting provided a platform to discuss various avenues for joint research, innovation, and academic collaboration, aligning with the advancements in the electric mobility sector. Prof. Patra highlighted the commitment of IIT (BHU) to research in e-mobility and acknowledged the complementary strengths of both institutions.

During his address, Prof. Patra articulated the potential for combining IIT (BHU)’s expertise in electric mobility technologies with the University of Michigan’s proficiency in electric vehicle systems. Discussions also focused on two sanctioned projects currently underway as part of the IIT (BHU)-University of Michigan collaboration. Prof. Rajeev Kumar Singh, Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering, elaborated on these projects, inviting further engagement in both existing and forthcoming initiatives. Key faculty members participated remotely, enhancing the collaborative discussions.

Future Research Directions and Alumni Engagement

The discussions held during the visit not only covered the ongoing projects but also explored the establishment of a Materials Research Team. This team is expected to focus on collaborative research efforts and develop a comprehensive white paper to identify potential future research directions in advanced materials.

Moreover, the interaction created opportunities to strengthen alumni networks and enhance institutional partnerships between IIT (BHU) and the University of Michigan. Both parties expressed a commitment to exploring various collaborative efforts that extend beyond the current agreement.
