Tamil Nadu Limits Deepavali 2026 Firecracker Use to Two One-Hour Slots

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Tamil Nadu government has announced restrictions on the use of firecrackers during Deepavali 2026, allowing residents to burst them only during two designated one-hour periods. According to a report, the approved times are from 6 am to 7 am and from 7 pm to 8 pm. This initiative aims to mitigate severe air and noise pollution associated with the festival while encouraging safer community celebrations.

An official release issued on Tuesday highlighted the importance of collective responsibility in protecting the environment. It emphasised that Deepavali, a festival symbolising lights and familial joy, should be celebrated in harmony with nature. The government has urged residents to adopt environmentally friendly practices instead of relying on high-decibel and smoke-emitting fireworks.

Environmental and Health Considerations

The new regulations are part of ongoing efforts to address environmental and public health concerns, including pollution of land, water, and air, as well as the risk of hearing damage from excessive noise. Following a Supreme Court ruling in 2018, only reduced-emission “green crackers” are permitted for manufacture and sale in the state. This decision aims to reduce the harmful effects of traditional firecrackers, which contribute significantly to air quality deterioration.

To promote compliance with these regulations, the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board has initiated awareness campaigns across various platforms, including schools, higher education institutions, Eco Clubs, the National Green Corps, local bodies, and district administrations. These campaigns are designed to educate the public on the importance of using environmentally friendly alternatives during the festival.

In addition to the awareness efforts, authorities have encouraged neighbourhood welfare associations to organise community firecracker events in open spaces. This approach aims to foster shared celebrations while minimising concentrated emissions in residential areas, thereby reducing the overall impact on air quality.

Guidelines for Celebration

Furthermore, the use of joint or series crackers is discouraged due to the excessive noise they generate. The advisory also extends to areas with fire-prone thatched huts, where the risk of fire hazards is significantly higher. The government aims to ensure that celebrations do not compromise safety or public health.

In conclusion, the Tamil Nadu government’s measures for Deepavali 2026 reflect a commitment to balancing traditional celebrations with environmental sustainability. By limiting firecracker use to specified times and promoting green alternatives, the authorities hope to create a safer and more enjoyable festival for all residents while protecting the environment.
