The CSR Journal Magazine

Ranbir Kapoor’s upcoming film, Ramayana: Part 1, is set to be released on Thursday, November 5. The film recently premiered at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles on October 27. Following the premiere, Kapoor discussed his extensive preparation for the role of Lord Rama, particularly focusing on the physical aspects required for the character.

In an interview with Review Nation, Kapoor revealed that he began training approximately eighteen months prior to the start of filming. He collaborated with an Indian Olympian to master archery techniques essential for portraying Lord Rama authentically. This training was complemented by workshops that emphasised movement, breathing, and physicality, which are crucial for embodying the character.

Kapoor expressed the importance of understanding the essence of Lord Rama, stating, “I could be playing Lord Rama, but the soul is mine. How do I change that? How do I bring a new soul?” He highlighted that while one can read various interpretations of the character, the true challenge lies in infusing personal depth into the portrayal.

Collaboration with Action Director Terry Notary

Ranbir Kapoor also spoke about his collaboration with action director Terry Notary, who is renowned for his work on the Planet of the Apes franchise, X2 (2003), and Superman Returns (2006). Kapoor noted that Notary’s workshops extended beyond mere combat training, focusing on broader aspects of movement and body language. This holistic approach aimed to enhance the actors’ overall physicality, making their performances more authentic.

During these workshops, Notary introduced techniques related to breathing, walking, and even climbing trees, which Kapoor found invaluable. He remarked on the privilege of learning new skills for each film, emphasising that Ramayana holds a special place in his heart due to its rich narrative and beloved characters. The actor stated, “Doing all of this was awesome,” reflecting on the unique experience of preparing for this iconic role.

Kapoor’s dedication to his craft underscores the effort that has gone into bringing this timeless story to life. The training and workshops have not only equipped him with the necessary skills but have also deepened his understanding of the character he is set to portray.
