IAF Issues RFI to Acquire 4–6 Long-Range Business Jets for VIP Transport

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has commenced the formal process to enhance its VIP transport capabilities by issuing a request for information (RFI) to acquire 4-6 new Long Range Business Jets (LRBJs).

This initiative seeks to modernize the Air Headquarters Communication Squadron located in Palam, Delhi, aiming for secure, efficient transportation for high-ranking military officers and governmental dignitaries. The current operational fleet includes four Embraer Legacy 600 jets, in service for over 20 years, which are due for phased replacement.

Details of the Request for Information

The RFI serves as an initial step to identify potential manufacturers and gain insights into available technological options prior to initiating a formal procurement process. In its announcement, the IAF emphasized the need for LRBJs capable of accommodating a minimum of 19 passengers, designed specifically for VIP transport. The request invites original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and authorized vendors to submit details on the products they can provide.

Current Fleet and its Specifications

The existing fleet comprises four Embraer Legacy 600 aircraft, each named Meghdoot, Vayudoot, Nabhdoot, and Gagandoot, which were inducted into service on September 21, 2005. These aircraft have been vital for various high-level transportation needs but are now reaching the end of their operational lifespan. The LRBJs to be acquired will support the movement of senior government officials beyond the top three VVIPs of India.

Distinction Between LRBJs and VVIP Aircraft

Notably, the LRBJs will serve a different purpose compared to the aircraft designated for India’s President, Vice-President, and Prime Minister. The specialized Boeing 777-300ER, recognized by the call sign ‘Air India One’, is exclusively modified and secured for use by these high officials. Conversely, the new LRBJs are intended for senior ministers such as those overseeing defense, finance, home affairs, and external affairs, along with chiefs from the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force.
