IAF Chief AP Singh Completes Final Flight in Uniform on Kiran Aircraft

The CSR Journal Magazine

Indian Air Force (IAF) Chief Air Chief Marshal AP Singh flew his final sortie in uniform on a Kiran aircraft at the Air Force Academy (AFA) in Dundigal, near Hyderabad, on Tuesday. This flight symbolised the culmination of his extensive flying career, as he was accompanied by Wing Commander (retd) V S Kochchar, who was his instructor four decades ago.

Singh expressed a sense of fulfilment in returning to the same aircraft that marked the beginning of his journey in aviation. Reflecting on his first flight, which took place on January 20, 1984, Singh noted, “I started my journey with the same aircraft. I think I must be the only Chief who is retiring on the basic aircraft he flew is still serving.”

This sentiment highlights the unique connection he has with the Kiran aircraft, as it has been a constant throughout his career. Upon landing, Singh received a water cannon salute, a traditional gesture recognising the achievements of senior officers. His graduation from the AFA in 1984 was marked by receiving the prestigious Sword of Honour, a testament to his excellence during training.

Significant Milestones in Singh’s Career

Prior to his final flight in the Kiran, Singh had flown his last sortie in a fighter jet, specifically the indigenous Tejas, on October 12 during Exercise Tarang Shakti at the Jodhpur Air Force Station. This exercise showcased the capabilities of the Tejas and underscored Singh’s commitment to advancing indigenous military aviation.

As he prepares for retirement later this month, Singh has had numerous accomplishments and leadership roles within the IAF. His tenure as Chief has been characterised by a focus on modernising the air force and enhancing operational readiness. Singh’s leadership has played a crucial role in various initiatives aimed at strengthening India’s air defence capabilities.

Wing Commander Kochchar, now 73 years old, described Singh as the “brightest pupil ever” and praised him as the “best chief.” He expressed his joy at having the opportunity to fly with Singh once more, stating that it was a dream come true for him. This reunion between instructor and student serves as a poignant reminder of the bonds formed during training and the lasting impact of mentorship in military aviation.

Reflections on a Distinguished Career

As Air Chief Marshal AP Singh concludes his service, he leaves behind a legacy of dedication and excellence within the Indian Air Force. His journey from a trainee pilot to the highest-ranking officer in the IAF exemplifies the potential for growth and achievement within the organisation.

Singh’s final flight not only marks the end of an era for him personally but also serves as an inspiration for the generations of pilots who will follow in his footsteps. The significance of Singh’s final sortie extends beyond personal achievement; it reflects the enduring values of the IAF and the importance of tradition in military aviation.

As he transitions into retirement, the impact of his leadership and the lessons learned throughout his career will continue to resonate within the ranks of the IAF. In conclusion, AP Singh’s last flight in uniform is a celebration of his remarkable journey and the relationships forged along the way. As he prepares to step down, the IAF acknowledges his contributions and looks forward to the future, inspired by the legacy he leaves behind.
