Hyderabad Techie Raises Theft Concerns, Faces Backlash From Housing Society RWA

The CSR Journal Magazine

A tech professional from Hyderabad has expressed dissatisfaction with the functioning of the residents’ welfare association (RWA) in his housing society following a theft at his residence. Shravan Venkataraman took to social media, detailing his experience where he alleged that society officials reprimanded him for voicing security concerns. The situation arose after he reported stolen items from his home and sought CCTV footage, only to discover that the cameras were not operational.

Venkataraman’s request for security footage in the residents’ group revealed that the cameras had malfunctioned, a fact that the RWA reportedly discovered only after his complaint. Posting about the incident, he urged fellow residents to be vigilant and consider installing personal security measures in their homes. His warning, however, led to unexpected backlash from the RWA.

Criticism from RWA Officials

The day after his post, Venkataraman was summoned by the housing society’s president and vice-president to the clubhouse, where he anticipated a dialogue regarding the theft investigation. Instead, he alleged that they confronted him aggressively for sharing his concerns with other residents, claiming he was damaging the society’s reputation by highlighting security weaknesses.

During the meeting, Venkataraman reported that the officials accused him of undermining the morale of the community. Tensions escalated when an office-bearer allegedly mocked the severity of the theft, comparing it to petty items not warranting serious attention. This incident left Venkataraman feeling frustrated and compelled him to exit the residents’ WhatsApp group.

Venkataraman also cited another troubling incident involving a tenant harassed by an elderly resident for walking her dog in what he described as a public space within the society. This situation reportedly escalated when the elderly resident accused the tenant of damaging his vehicle, prompting police intervention. Such occurrences have led Venkataraman to reflect on broader issues related to the governance of housing societies.

Broader Implications for Housing Societies

The events have prompted Venkataraman to consider a prevailing issue concerning the dynamics within some residents’ associations. He argued that older generations often adhere to rigid hierarchical structures, expecting compliance from younger residents without room for dialogue or questioning. He expressed concerns about the impact of these attitudes on community relationships.

Venkataraman also suggested that certain members of the RWA impose their personal standards and regulations on others within the community, often leading to disputes over how individuals should conduct their lives within the society. He described scenarios where residents faced restrictions on visitors, complaints, and everyday interactions, reflecting a culture of controlling behaviour.

His experiences and subsequent reflections have resonated with numerous users on social media, many of whom shared similar instances where they encountered confrontational attitudes from housing society governing bodies. Several individuals recounted experiences where they felt pressured or rebuked for proposing solutions or raising issues within their own residential communities.

As a result of this ongoing conversation, some social media users have advised potential homebuyers to thoroughly investigate the governance of residents’ associations prior to making property purchases. They noted that issues of authority and resistance to change are frequent challenges faced even in smaller housing communities. Venkataraman’s narrative seems to capture a growing concern regarding the management and oversight of residential societies across urban India.
