Hyd Former Security Guard Allegedly Kidnaps and Kills Four-Year-Old Girl

The CSR Journal Magazine

A four-year-old girl was reportedly kidnapped and murdered by Vikram Kumar, a former security guard from a gated community in Hyderabad. The alleged crime took place after Kumar demanded a ransom of Rs 20 lakh from the girl’s family. The police stated that Kumar, who was employed as a security guard in the community from September 22 to October 6, was arrested on October 11.

The investigation commenced following a complaint lodged by the girl’s father, who received ransom calls on October 10 from an unidentified individual claiming to have the child in his custody. Police subsequently initiated an investigation, which led to a search operation. Tragically, the girl’s body was discovered in a water sump within the clubhouse cellar of the gated community in Kowkoor on October 10. It was not until the following day that Kumar emerged as a prime suspect and was apprehended, having allegedly gone into hiding after committing the crime.

Confession and Circumstances

During police interrogation, Vikram Kumar reportedly confessed to murdering the girl as part of a premeditated plan to extort money from her parents. According to Malkajgiri Police Commissioner B Sumathi, he entered the gated community on October 10 with the intention of carrying out the kidnapping. However, upon locating the girl, Kumar allegedly concluded that managing her during the abduction would be too difficult. As a result, he decided to kill her to conceal his actions.

After the alleged murder, Kumar concealed the victim’s body in an unused water sump located in the cellar, a decision likely made to avoid detection, as the area was thought to be infrequently visited by residents. Preliminary investigations indicate that the cause of death was strangulation, according to police reports.

Commissioner Sumathi noted that aside from the financial motive, there appeared to be no other reason for the murder. She mentioned that the area of the cellar lacked CCTV surveillance, further facilitating Kumar’s concealment of the crime. In a calculated effort, he used the SIM card of another security guard in the community to make the phone calls demanding the ransom from the girl’s family.

Implications for Community Safety

Following this tragic incident, the Malkajgiri police have highlighted the urgent need for improvements in residential security protocols. Commissioner Sumathi underscored that relying solely on access control and security personnel is insufficient for ensuring safety within gated communities. Enhanced measures should include thorough background checks of personnel, effective supervision, proactive resident involvement, and robust coordination between residential associations and local police.

The police department urged Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), apartment associations, and community residents to participate actively in initiatives designed to improve safety, such as ‘Mee Suraksha – Domestic Helpers Verification Initiative’ and ‘Nenu Saitham 2.0 – CCTV Surveillance Programme’. Awareness meetings are being organised across various residential communities to educate residents about safeguarding measures.

As the investigation progresses, authorities are committed to completing their inquiries promptly, with intentions to present the case before a Fast Track Court. The police aim to seek capital punishment for the accused, given the severe public concern surrounding the case. The incident has underscored broader societal issues regarding security and the need for vigilant community engagement in safeguarding residents.
