HRCP Urges Immediate Release of Aurat March Activists Detained in Islamabad

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has issued a statement demanding the prompt release of both organizers and participants of the Aurat March in Islamabad who were arrested by local authorities on International Women’s Day. The commission emphasized that the commemoration of this day is a fundamental right of women, urging the government to uphold democratic freedoms. In their statement, HRCP expressed, “Marking International Women’s Day is a legitimate right of all Pakistani women and must be respected by the authorities. Such oppressive measures in the name of maintaining law and order are highly deplorable.”

Details Surrounding the Arrests

According to local reports, law enforcement detained several women’s rights activists in Islamabad ahead of a planned demonstration to mark International Women’s Day on March 8. Police sources confirmed that the arrests occurred near Super Market in Sector F-6, where the activists gathered prior to the march aimed at reaching the National Press Club. Officers were already stationed in the area and subsequently detained the protesters, transporting them to the Women’s Police Station.

List of Detained Activists Released

Following the detentions, the Women’s Police Station provided a list of 19 women activists associated with the Aurat March who had been detained. Among those apprehended were prominent activists like Farzana Bari, along with her daughters and human rights defender Tahira Abdullah, as well as several other organizers and participants. Additionally, it was reported that numerous other individuals, including men, were taken into custody for their involvement in the march.

Participants Share Their Experiences

One participant, Zoya Rehman, took to social media to share her distress over the situation. She mentioned that her husband, along with approximately 20 other men, had been detained by the police, and noted, “No news of when they will be released.” This showcases the escalating tensions surrounding the march, which aims to advocate for women’s rights in Pakistan.

The Purpose of Aurat March

The Aurat March is an annual movement that occurs in Pakistan, primarily on International Women’s Day. It gathers activists, students, and representatives from civil society to advocate for gender equality, protection against violence, economic rights, and enhanced political and social freedoms for women and various marginalized groups. The movement aims to raise awareness about the challenges faced by women in Pakistan and seeks to promote a more equitable society.
