How to Make Ukkadiche Modak at Home: Step-by-Step Recipe for Ganesh Chaturthi

The CSR Journal Magazine

Ganesh Chaturthi is a revered festival that marks the celebration of Lord Ganesha’s arrival. The occasion is considered incomplete without the offering of his favourite sweets, particularly the traditional Ukkadiche Modak. Known for its delightful taste and cultural significance, this dish plays an essential role in Ganesh festivities, contributing to the overall joyous atmosphere.

The preparation of Ukkadiche Modak involves steamed rice flour encasing a sweet filling made of freshly grated coconut and organic jaggery. This traditional sweet not only satisfies the palate but also holds a special place in Hindu rituals as a sacred offering to the deity.

Ingredients Required for Ukkadiche Modak

To successfully create Ukkadiche Modak, a specific set of ingredients is required. The main components are one cup of rice flour, one cup of water, one and a half cups of freshly grated coconut, and one cup of grated jaggery. Additionally, half a teaspoon of green cardamom powder, one teaspoon of poppy seeds, a pinch of nutmeg powder, two teaspoons of ghee, and a small amount of salt are necessary for the recipe.

These ingredients contribute to the unique flavour and texture of the Modak, making it a delectable treat for Lord Ganesha. It’s important to use fresh coconut and quality jaggery to enhance the overall taste of the dish.

Step-by-Step Preparation Method

The first step in making Ukkadiche Modak is preparing the filling. Start by heating one teaspoon of ghee in a pan. Once heated, add the poppy seeds, grated coconut, and jaggery. Cook this mixture over medium heat for about four to five minutes, or until the jaggery melts. Add the cardamom and nutmeg powder before removing it from the heat, allowing the mixture to cool.

Next, prepare the rice flour dough. In a separate pot, bring one cup of water, one teaspoon of ghee, and a pinch of salt to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat and add the rice flour, mixing thoroughly. Cover the pot and let the mixture steam for three to four minutes, ensuring it cooks properly.

After the dough has cooled to a comfortable temperature, knead it into a smooth and soft consistency using a little water or ghee on your hands. This step is crucial for ensuring that the Modak holds its shape during cooking.

To shape the Modak, take a small portion of the dough and flatten it using your fingers to create a bowl-like structure. Pinch the edges to form pleats and fill the centre with the coconut-jaggery mixture. Bring the pleated edges together and seal the top to ensure the filling is enclosed.

Finally, prepare to steam the Modaks. Line the steamer with a damp cotton cloth or banana leaf, placing the shaped Modaks on top. Steam them for approximately ten to twelve minutes. Once completed, pour a little saffron-infused milk or ghee over the Modaks as a final touch before offering them to Lord Ganesha.
