Home Appliance Prices Set to Rise in India from October 1

The CSR Journal Magazine

The upcoming price adjustments for home appliances in India will take effect on October 1, according to reports. Major brands, including LG and Haier, are expected to implement increases due to escalating manufacturing costs linked to various factors, such as rising component prices and currency fluctuations. As the festive season approaches, this change may impact consumer decisions regarding new purchases.

The adjustments will vary across categories, with expected increases of up to 9 per cent for certain appliances. Typically, the festive period sees a surge in purchases, but this year appears to differ significantly, with many brands preparing for price hikes instead of promotional offers.

Reasons Behind The Increase

The primary reason for this price escalation is attributed to the heightened costs of raw materials. Industries are contending with increased prices for materials like copper, steel, and aluminium, which have all grown costlier due to various global circumstances, including turmoil in West Asia. Additionally, freight costs and currency volatility are compounding the financial pressures on manufacturers.

Despite the impending increase, consumer impact may be mitigated initially. Reports indicate that many dealers have pre-stocked inventories in anticipation of Diwali festivities. As a result, customers purchasing from these stock items might still access the older price points, at least until current inventories are depleted.

Traditionally, the festive season, which encompasses events from Onam to Diwali, significantly impacts annual appliance sales in India, accounting for 30 to 40 per cent of total sales. This reliance on seasonal sales underscores the significance of consumer behaviour during this period.

Brands Announcing Price Changes

Numerous brands are reportedly implementing price increases across various appliance categories. Companies such as Blue Star, Godrej, Haier, and Daikin have either confirmed adjustments or are in the process of rolling them out, with increases ranging from 4 to 10 per cent across products. LG Electronics India Limited has confirmed that air conditioner prices will rise by 5 to 7 per cent starting October 1.

According to Blue Star Managing Director B Thiagarajan, the prices of both air conditioners and deep freezers have already increased by 5 to 8 per cent. He noted that the rise in commodity prices, influenced by ongoing global conflicts, has contributed to these necessary adjustments.

Several industry representatives have confirmed that for many brands, the timing of price increases may vary, with some implementing changes from October while others may follow in November. Godrej’s Appliances Business VP Kamal Nandi indicated that price hikes across categories are inevitable and that current stock levels would cover demand during Diwali.

It remains uncertain how these price increases will affect overall consumer demand. Daikin Airconditioning India Chairman Kanwaljeet Jawa acknowledged the potential long-term impacts if the current economic situation does not stabilise. The trend of rising prices is not limited to home appliances, as consumers have also observed similar increases in the smartphone and electronics markets this year, affecting brands like Realme and Apple.
