The Himachal Pradesh Police has organised an art exhibition at the historic Gaiety Theatre in Shimla, with the intention of conveying a powerful anti-drug message through creative expressions. This event, held on April 7, reflects the dedication of police personnel beyond their typical roles within the department. Director General of Police Ashok Tiwari emphasised that the exhibition serves as a platform to reveal hidden talents while affirming the force’s commitment to combatting drug abuse.

During the opening, DGP Tiwari highlighted that more than 16 police officers have faced termination due to alleged involvement in drug-related activities, reinforcing a firm stance against any association with substance abuse within the ranks. “We are sending a clear message that drug abuse will not be tolerated, even within the department,” Tiwari stated, underscoring the serious approach the police force is taking towards this issue.

Local Officials Praise Initiative and Its Broader Impact

The Mayor of Shimla, Sanjay Chauhan, attended the exhibition and commended the initiative, describing it as a significant step in engaging police personnel in creative outlets outside their routine responsibilities. Chauhan noted that providing a forum for officers to express themselves through art reflects a commendable aspect of their service to society. He particularly acknowledged the impactful artworks that showcased the harmful effects of drug addiction and the emotional turmoil connected with it.

Chauhan, speaking on the topic “Beyond the Uniform,” expressed that the exhibition served not only to highlight artistic abilities but also to convey critical social messages. The Mayor’s remarks resonated with the audience, demonstrating the capacity of art to address pressing societal challenges and the various dimensions of police work.

Response from Participating Officers and Future Initiatives

Several participating police personnel expressed enthusiasm about the event. Constable Babita remarked that the exhibition provided a rare chance for officers to share their creative pursuits. “The demands of police duty can be overwhelming, but I make time to engage in my passion for art. Through my creations, I wish to raise awareness regarding the dangers of drug abuse,” she shared, showcasing the commitment of officers to address the issue through personal expression.

The exhibition contained a diverse array of artworks, including oil, acrylic, and watercolour pieces, many of which depicted themes rooted in Himachali culture, societal issues, and the risks associated with substance abuse. These artistic displays served as both a reflection of the artists’ inner thoughts and a call to action against drug misuse.

Authorities stated that the police department intends to organise similar events in the future to enhance wellness, creativity, and community engagement within the force while simultaneously bolstering its anti-drug initiatives. The success of this exhibition may lead to more opportunities for personnel to participate in such endeavours, promoting a more holistic approach to community service and personal growth.
