Himachal Pradesh is grappling with widespread disruptions due to ongoing torrential rains, as confirmed by the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC). The latest reports indicate that 124 roads are currently blocked, severely affecting travel and transport across the region. The district of Mandi has been identified as the most impacted, with 51 roads closed, followed closely by Kullu with 39 and Shimla with 13.

Additionally, road blockages have been reported in other districts including Chamba, Sirmaur, Kangra, Lahaul and Spiti, and Una. Chamba has seven road closures, Sirmaur six, Kangra five, Lahaul and Spiti four, and Una three. The extensive disruption of road networks reflects the severity of the monsoon conditions in the region.

The power infrastructure has also suffered significant setbacks, with a total of 255 distribution transformer regions (DTRs) down across the state. Of these, a remarkable 245 outages have been recorded in Mandi, including 163 in the Sundernagar area and 63 in Mandi sub-divisions. Further power disruptions have been noted in Kalpa, Chopal, and Paonta Sahib, affecting the local supply.

Impact on Water Supply and Human Casualties

The adverse monsoon conditions have further disrupted 17 water supply schemes across the state, with Shimla and Hamirpur experiencing the brunt of these impacts. A total of 12 schemes in Shimla and five in Hamirpur are reported to be affected, impacting access to clean drinking water for local residents.

The cumulative report on monsoon incidents has revealed that 155 human fatalities have occurred due to disaster-related events. Among these deaths, 68 were linked directly to disasters such as landslides, falling trees, and flooding, while 87 fatalities were attributed to road accidents. Mandi has recorded the highest number of disaster-related deaths at 14, with Kangra, Chamba, and Shimla experiencing significant losses as well.

Road accidents, which have compounded the tragedy, resulted in an additional 87 deaths across various districts. Chamba had the highest road accident fatalities at 15, followed by Kullu and Shimla, each reporting 12 deaths, and Kangra with 10.

Economic Impact and Ongoing Relief Efforts

The economic toll of this monsoon disaster has been considerable, with total losses amounting to Rs. 83,526.19 lakhs, or approximately Rs. 8,352.62 crores. The Public Works Department has reported the largest losses at Rs. 61,585.43 lakhs, while the Jal Shakti Vibhag has faced damages estimated to be Rs. 19,986.05 lakhs.

Residential and commercial properties have not been spared; 213 houses have been completely destroyed and 620 partially affected. Additionally, 256 huts and 22 shops have sustained damage from the harsh weather. The incident has also resulted in the loss of 200 animals and damaged 160 animal sheds throughout the state.

Efforts to restore normalcy are underway, with local administration and emergency services concentrating on clearing blocked roads and restoring power supplies. Restoration operations are being prioritised for key road links and critical public utilities in the severely affected areas to expedite recovery.
