El Nino Affects India’s Monsoon, Anticipated Impact on Winter Weather

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent conclusion of India’s monsoon season has raised questions regarding the potential ramifications of the ongoing El Nino weather phenomenon. The 2026 southwest monsoon season has recorded a rainfall deficit of 13 per cent, leading to diminished water reserves and negatively impacting agricultural outputs across various regions. The strengthened El Nino, observed over the Pacific, is projected to remain a significant climate factor throughout the winter months.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that El Nino may escalate to a “very strong” classification later this year. However, it is crucial to note that a weak monsoon does not necessarily result in a dry or harsh winter. The relationship between El Nino and winter conditions is intricate and warrants further examination.

This year’s circumstances present a particularly poignant concern because El Nino continues to escalate. Its evolving nature has evoked apprehension about its potential impacts on the forthcoming winter months.

Link Between El Nino and Winter Conditions

Historically, one of the most apparent correlations during notable El Nino events is the trend towards elevated winter temperatures across parts of India. This phenomenon is attributable to shifts in large-scale weather patterns, including alterations in air circulation across the tropics. Such changes can significantly influence wind patterns and, consequently, the winter weather systems affecting India.

A pertinent example is the winter of 2015-16, which followed a strong El Nino and a markedly deficient monsoon that year. Observations indicated that many regions experienced temperatures several degrees above the normal range throughout December and January, alongside greatly reduced winter rainfall. The warmth observed during this period has been attributed to El Nino and its effect on regional atmospheric circulation.

For the agricultural sector, winter is not merely the “cold season”; it is a vital growing period for crops such as wheat and various Rabi crops. Thus, understanding how El Nino affects winter weather is essential for planning and preparation in agriculture.

Historical Context and Variability of Weather Patterns

The history of El Nino events illustrates the complexity in understanding its impact on winter weather. Major occurrences in 1982 and 1987 were associated with significant deficits in the Indian monsoon. However, the 1997 El Nino produced a near-normal all-India monsoon, demonstrating that atmospheric conditions over the Indian Ocean can lead to vastly different outcomes.

Examining the winter of 2015-16 further emphasises how El Nino can lead to unusual warmth and reduced winter chill. Nevertheless, other instances illustrate how various climatic factors, including regional rainfall and the behaviour of western disturbances, can influence winter outcomes in diverse ways.

As the current conditions suggest the possibility of an intensifying El Nino, this winter could witness warmer-than-usual temperatures in several regions. Projections indicate disrupted winter rainfall and increased variability in weather patterns. Despite these factors, not every part of the country is anticipated to experience warm or dry conditions.

Looking Ahead to Winter 2026-27

With El Nino set to strengthen as 2026 progresses, there are predictions for its persistence into early 2027. For India, this could imply a winter marked by above-average temperatures in many areas, as well as unpredictable rainfall patterns.

However, the prevailing atmospheric conditions in India will be equally critical in determining the winter’s character. The overarching query for farmers and stakeholders becomes not merely, “Will El Nino lead to warmer winters?” but rather whether the requisite interplay of cold, rain, and snow will be achieved at the appropriate times. While the Pacific may influence the situation, the outcome will ultimately depend on India’s own atmospheric conditions.
