Gujarat Government Allocates Rs 500 Crore for Wire-Free City Mission

The CSR Journal Magazine

On February 26, the Gujarat Government announced a provision of Rs 500 crore dedicated to the transition of overhead power networks to underground systems in Municipal Corporations and Municipalities. This initiative is part of the “Gujarat Wire Free City Mission,” aimed at enhancing the state’s infrastructure in response to rising electricity demands.

The Chief Minister’s Office of Gujarat highlighted that the decision underscores the need for a consistent, safe, and high-quality power supply. The initiative is expected to ensure uninterrupted electricity for residents and critical services, including hospitals, water supply systems, and policing facilities. The program aims to significantly decrease instances of power disruptions and enhance safety in densely populated urban regions.

Enhancements in Safety and Reliability

By transitioning to underground cabling, the initiative addresses electrical hazards posed by exposed wires and aims to pave the way for a more organized urban environment. This step is considered essential for making Gujarat ready for upcoming Commonwealth and Olympic events, with plans to convert all Municipal Corporations and Municipalities into “Wire-Free Cities” progressively.

Complementary Sanitation Initiatives

In addition to the Wire-Free City Mission, the Gujarat Panchayat Department is implementing the Mukhyamantri Nirmal Gram Yojana, which has an allocated budget of Rs 650 crore. This scheme is operational in 667 villages across 21 talukas in 12 districts and aims to improve sanitation and public health in rural areas.

Operational Framework for Waste Management

The Mukhyamantri Nirmal Gram Yojana focuses on appointing agencies for door-to-door waste collection and ensuring proper disposal at designated sites. Each taluka will oversee the transportation of collected waste to the nearest municipal processing facilities. The initiative extends to urban authorities including RUDA, GUDA, and VUDA, aiming to elevate the cleanliness standards in rural areas.

Supporting Public Health Initiatives

The Gujarat Government’s strategy also encourages the maintenance of sanitation assets and vehicles under the Swachh Bharat Mission. By raising clean standards and improving public health measures, the initiative seeks to foster healthier living environments across both urban and rural communities.
