Global Markets Rise Following Democratic Wins in US Midterm Elections

The CSR Journal Magazine

Global stock markets experienced an upward trend on Wednesday as the Democratic Party secured majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate during the US midterm elections. This outcome is anticipated to create increased resistance to President Donald Trump’s policy initiatives.

Investors are reportedly monitoring technology stocks and developments related to artificial intelligence (AI). US stock futures also reflected this positive sentiment, with the S&P 500 futures rising by 0.2 per cent and the Dow Jones Industrial Average futures increasing by 0.4 per cent. In contrast, oil prices saw a decline, indicating a mixed reaction in the commodities market.

The election results signify a setback for Republican governance, likely complicating the Trump administration’s ability to implement its policy agenda. Analysts suggest that a balanced power dynamic between the two parties is generally preferred by markets, as it diminishes the likelihood of significant policy shifts that could impact the economy.

European Markets Show Positive Trends

European stock markets opened on a positive note on Wednesday. France’s CAC 40 index increased by 0.4 per cent, reaching 8,055.02, while Britain’s FTSE 100 saw a slight rise of 0.1 per cent to 10,646.43. Germany’s DAX index also gained 0.5 per cent, climbing to 25,995.13. Investors are awaiting the release of the eurozone’s preliminary consumer price index (CPI) data for October.

Additionally, the Bank of England’s interest rate decision, set for Thursday, is another significant event that market participants are closely monitoring. The positive movement in European markets may be influenced by the results of the US elections, which have implications for global economic stability and investor confidence.

Mixed Signals from Asian Markets

Asian markets displayed mixed trading patterns, with gains in China and Hong Kong contrasting with losses in Japan, Australia, and Taiwan. Japan’s Nikkei 225 index fell by 1.4 per cent, closing at 62,188.63. Notably, shares of SoftBank Group, an investor in OpenAI, decreased by 3.2 per cent, while Kioxia Holdings, a memory chipmaker, dropped by 5.4 per cent due to disappointing guidance.

In South Korea, the Kospi index rose by 0.6 per cent to 5,683.80, although shares of SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics experienced slight declines. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index increased by 1.5 per cent to 23,888.46, and China’s Shanghai Composite climbed by 2.2 per cent to 3,686.17, recovering from a yearly low.

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 index fell by 0.6% to 8,834.50 following a recent interest rate hike by the central bank. Taiwan’s Taiex also declined by 0.8 per cent, while India’s Sensex managed a modest gain of 0.3 per cent.

Wall Street Gains Supported by AI Stocks

On Tuesday, the S&P 500 closed 0.4 per cent higher, despite most stocks within the index ending lower. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped by 197 points, or 0.4%, while the Nasdaq Composite increased by 0.8 per cent. Chipmakers such as Nvidia and Broadcom provided significant support to the S&P 500, with major tech companies like Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta Platforms also seeing gains.

Concerns regarding high valuations of technology stocks have led to fluctuations in trading. Apple, while less reliant on AI compared to some peers, is also facing challenges due to rising memory chip prices, which are expected to impact profit margins.

In the commodities market, Brent Crude rose by 0.4 per cent to $103.88 per barrel, while US benchmark crude increased by 0.3 per cent to $96.34 per barrel. Currency markets saw the US dollar weaken against the Japanese yen, dropping to 158.17 yen from 158.69 yen, while the euro strengthened against the dollar, rising to $1.1242 from $1.1194.
