Global Condemnation Follows Deadly Houthi Attack on Riyadh Airport

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh has provoked widespread condemnation from leaders and officials worldwide. On Saturday, October 10, the assault resulted in the deaths of at least 13 individuals, including an Indian citizen, and left more than 300 others injured. Saudi Arabia has accused the Iran-backed Houthi rebels from Yemen of being responsible for the strike, occurring amidst escalating tensions in the region marked by a series of similar attacks on Saudi infrastructure this month.

The United Nations, European Union, and other countries have expressed strong opposition to this act of violence. The US President has indicated that the United States is considering supporting Saudi Arabia in its military response against the Houthis, a stance echoed by other nations in the West Asian region. Notable among those expressing solidarity with Riyadh are Pakistan, Qatar, and Malaysia, emphasising a collective stand against attacks on civilians.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned the strike as a “dangerous escalation” and expressed condolences for the victims’ families. She asserted that violence instigated by Iran’s proxies jeopardises regional stability and calls for an immediate cessation of such attacks on civilians.

Details and Consequences of the Attack

The deadly incident at Riyadh’s airport follows a series of similar assaults targeting Saudi Arabian installations. Notably, air transportation has been disrupted, with several attacks registered against Riyadh and Abha airports in the past weeks. The ongoing violence raises serious concerns regarding broader regional instability, particularly amidst the extensive conflict involving Iran and its adversaries in the region.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed profound dismay over the attack, emphasising that targeting civilians contravenes international law. He urged an immediate halt to such hostilities, reflecting a unanimous call from the international community for respect towards civilian protections during conflicts.

The attack prompted comments from various global leaders, including US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who described the incident as “reprehensible” and extended condolences to the victims’ families. Canada’s Prime Minister labelled the assaults as “abhorrent” and firmly rejected any justification for violence against civilian infrastructure.

Statements from Regional and Global Leaders

In addition to expressions of regret from global figures, regional leaders such as Turkey’s Burhanettin Duran and Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also denounced the attack. The Turkish official called for a coordinated international effort to prevent further hostilities, while Netanyahu condemned the terrorist nature of the attack, asserting the need for resilient action against such threats.

Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim articulated his unequivocal denouncement of the Houthi strike, stressing that civilian lives could not be sacrificed in conflicts. His statement reiterated Malaysia’s solidarity with Saudi Arabia and called for diplomatic solutions to avoid future escalations.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the incident as a violation of international law, reaffirming Islamabad’s commitment to supporting Saudi territorial integrity amid growing concerns over the region’s security. In similar sentiments, Qatar and Palestine both expressed support for Saudi Arabia and wished for a speedy recovery for the injured.

As global condemnation continues, the Saudi-led coalition fighting the Houthis described the, which has resulted in a significant humanitarian impact. Following the attack, Saudi civil aviation authorities suspended operations at the airport, diverting flights and calling for heightened security measures to prevent further incidents. The fear of a broader regional conflict remains a key concern as nations collectively urge an end to violence against civilians and essential infrastructure.
