Gaurav Gogoi, president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, visited Majuli on Friday, February 13 to discuss various developmental strategies for the state, should the Congress secure governance in the upcoming elections. Addressing local residents, Gogoi elaborated on the party’s commitment to enhancing Assam’s infrastructure and socio-economic conditions.
During his visit, Gogoi responded to recent comments made by families of martyrs concerning his alleged connections with Pakistan, asserting his deep respect for those who have lost loved ones in service to the nation. He emphasized his personal engagement with these families, noting his history as a former Lok Sabha MP for Jorhat and his repeated visits to meet the family of Captain Jintu Gogoi, a Kargil War martyr.
His remarks came on the heels of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s announcement regarding the Special Investigation Team’s inquiry into Gogoi’s purported ties to Pakistan. According to reports, the SIT findings will be revised and sent to central authorities for additional scrutiny.
Pain expressed by the parents of Captain Jintu Gogoi was evident, particularly in light of Gogoi’s past travels to Pakistan, a nation viewed by many in India as an adversary. Thogiran Gogoi, the martyr’s father, stated that any individual suspected of collusion against the country warrants investigation, regardless of their standing or connections.
During the visit, Gogoi laid out key priorities for the Congress party if elected, including appealing to the Prime Minister for funds to address flood and erosion management. He also advocated for the immediate implementation of Scheduled Tribe status for the six main ethnic communities in Assam, underscoring the importance of federal cooperation in state affairs.
Gogoi acknowledged the history of collaboration between state and central governments, recalling how under his father’s leadership, significant advancements for Assam were achieved during Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s premiership. He expressed optimism about the potential for renewed partnership with the central government to tackle pressing issues facing the state.
As the assembly elections approach, Gogoi clarified that Prime Minister Modi’s upcoming visit should not influence voters’ choices. He reiterated that citizens will be focusing on electing a state government and a Chief Minister, distinct from the national leadership’s role.
