Four TN Fishermen Found Dead After Cyclone Murasu Boat Capsize

The CSR Journal Magazine

Four fishermen from Tamil Nadu have been confirmed dead after their boat capsized off the coast of Andhra Pradesh during Cyclone Murasu. This information was provided by Prakasam District Collector P Raja Babu to the Press Trust of India on Thursday. The fishermen were among nine individuals aboard the vessel when it overturned, and search operations are still underway for the remaining five fishermen.

The fishermen had set off from Chennai on October 29 and were advised to secure their boats due to the impending cyclone. In response to the warnings, four boats were anchored along the Andhra Pradesh coast, with three located at Ramayapatnam Port and one at Nizampatnam Port.

Collector Babu confirmed that the bodies of the deceased fishermen were recovered, with three found washed ashore at Kothapatnam and the fourth retrieved during ongoing search efforts. The bodies are currently being transported to the mortuary at the local Government General Hospital for further procedures.

Details of the Incident and Recovery Efforts

According to Babu, he has been in communication with officials from Tamil Nadu who are en route to Andhra Pradesh. Arrangements are being made to recover the capsized boat and bring it to shore. Once the necessary formalities are completed, the bodies will be handed over to the Tamil Nadu officials.

On November 2, Tamil Nadu officials had reported that all fishermen and their boats were safe at their respective ports. However, on November 3, the nine fishermen aboard the boat anchored at Nizampatnam decided to travel towards Ramayapatnam to meet their colleagues without notifying either the Andhra Pradesh or Tamil Nadu authorities.

While making their way to Ramayapatnam, the boat encountered severe weather conditions, including strong winds associated with the cyclone, which ultimately led to its capsizing. The Coast Guard was subsequently alerted and initiated rescue operations to locate the missing fishermen.

Impact of Cyclone Murasu on Coastal Areas

The severe cyclonic storm Murasu made landfall on the southern Andhra Pradesh coast early on Tuesday, impacting areas between Nellore and Narasapur, near Ongole. The cyclone has reportedly caused extensive damage in the region, prompting local authorities to assess the situation and coordinate relief efforts.

As the search for the remaining fishermen continues, the Tamil Nadu government has identified the nine individuals involved and has shared their names and photographs with the relevant authorities. This identification process aims to facilitate communication and coordination between the two states during this challenging time.

Efforts are ongoing to ensure the safety of the remaining fishermen and to provide necessary support to their families. The situation remains critical as authorities work to manage the aftermath of the cyclone and ensure the welfare of those affected.
