The CSR Journal Magazine

With further deterioration of physical condition, Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia (80) has been put on ventilation. According to the Medical Board, she was kept under ventilation from Thursday night. Members of the Medical Board are keeping a close eye on her around the clock.

BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman’s wife Dr. Zubaida Rahman is reportedly traveling to the hospital in Dhaka every day and supervising her treatment. A statement has been issued by the Medical Board regarding Khaleda Zia’s physical condition. Cardiologist Shahbuddin Talukder said that suddenly the oxygen level in her blood started decreasing. As a result, her breathing difficulty increased. It was decided to keep her on BiPAP support. However, her physical condition did not improve even then. Therefore, she was kept on ventilation.

The former Prime Minister of Bangladesh has diabetes, heart and lung complications. The problems are gradually increasing, according to the news. According to the information received from the Medical Board, her kidneys have stopped working. Doctors have advised dialysis every day. Besides, her other organs are sometimes responding to treatment. Doctors on the medical board are keeping a close eye on her 24 hours a day.

The BNP leader has been suffering from physical problems for a long time. In this situation, it was being considered taking Khaleda Zia to London. Although no new update has been received from the BNP or her family on this matter. Earlier, Qatar Airways was supposed to provide an air ambulance to take Khaleda Zia to London.

Khaleda Zia in Dhaka hospital since November 23

Zia has been undergoing treatment at Dhaka’s Evercare Hospital since November 23 for multiple ailments. Her personal physician AZM Zahid Hossain on Thursday last week had said that Zia’s medical board has decided to send her to the UK for advanced treatment. She will be taken to London, where her elder son and acting BNP chief Tarique Rahman lives, via the Qatar Royal Air Ambulance on late Thursday night or early Friday, he had told reporters.

Khaleda Zia’s elder son Tarique Rahman currently serves as the acting chairman of the BNP, the political party led by his mother. Rahman has been living in self-imposed exile in London since 2008. Rehman recently expressed his intention to return to Bangladesh to contest the upcoming general elections in February 2026.

However, the arrival of the air ambulance sent by the Emir of Qatar was delayed due to “technical issues”, deferring her departure to Sunday. On Saturday, Hossain, who is also BNP’s policy-making standing committee member, told reporters that the medical board has postponed Zia’s planned travel to London for an indefinite period as she remains too unwell for long-haul travel.
Begum Khaleda last travelled to London for treatment in January aboard an air ambulance from the Emir of Qatar’s personal fleet.
