Former AGP Leader Jayanta Khaound Joins Congress Before Assam Assembly Elections

The CSR Journal Magazine

Congress strengthened its position in Assam as former Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) national finance secretary Jayanta Khaound officially joined the party. The induction took place at the Congress headquarters in New Delhi and was attended by several prominent leaders.

Among them were Jitendra Singh Alwar, Congress’s Assam in-charge and AICC general secretary, D K Shivakumar, Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka and senior observer for Assam, Gaurav Gogoi, president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, and national secretary Manoj Chauhan.

Khaound’s Entry Reflects Political Realignment

Upon welcoming Khaound, Gaurav Gogoi underscored that the arrival of a grassroots leader like him signifies the increasing public dissatisfaction in Assam towards Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s administration.

Gogoi stated that various leaders within the ruling party are feeling overshadowed under the current BJP leadership. He also mentioned that there is a noticeable shift towards political change in the state.

Allegations Against BJP Leadership

Gogoi further claimed that Khaound’s decision to join Congress stemmed from the perceived arbitrary behavior of Chief Minister Sarma, who he accused of promoting individuals lacking competence in politics. According to Gogoi, the Chief Minister has been sidelining long-serving politicians who have made significant contributions, opting instead to associate with those involved in corrupt practices.

Concerns Over Regional Identity

Jitendra Singh expressed concerns regarding the BJP’s strategy to diminish regional identities while gradually undermining regional parties. His comments reflect a growing unease about the political landscape as Assam prepares for assembly elections scheduled for the first half of this year.

This development signals a potential realignment of political allegiances within the state ahead of the polls.
