Foodies, This One’s for You! Odisha’s Mega Food & Crafts Mela Starts Feb 6- 8

The CSR Journal Magazine

A three-day Odisha Food and Crafts Mela is scheduled to take place from February 6 to 8, offering visitors a glimpse into the state’s cultural heritage through its traditional cuisine and handicrafts. Organised with the aim of promoting Odisha’s rich art, craft, and culinary diversity, the fair will present a wide range of handmade products and regional dishes.

Traditional Handicrafts to Feature Prominently

The mela will display a variety of well-known crafts from various districts of Odisha including Pattachitra paintings, stone and wood carvings, appliqué work from Pipili, silver filigree from Cuttack, and tribal jewellery. Artisans from different regions will present their handcrafted items, many of which have received Geographical Indication (GI) tags. The exhibition aims to provide a platform for these artisans to connect with a broader audience and promote the preservation of traditional crafts.

Diverse Odia Cuisine to Be Offered

Visitors will have the opportunity to taste a range of authentic culinary specialities from Odisha. The food section will include dishes such as Dalma, Pakhala Bhata, Chakuli Pitha, Rasagola, Chhena Poda, and other traditional Odia favourites. The food stalls will be managed by chefs and home cooks presenting age-old recipes that reflect the distinct and varied flavours of the state. A focus will be placed on both vegetarian and non-vegetarian items of significance to Odia cuisine.

In addition to food and crafts, the mela will also feature cultural performances including Odissi dance, folk music, and tribal dances that represent different communities of Odisha. Live demonstrations of traditional crafts such as weaving, painting, and embroidery are expected to draw attention from attendees interested in the process behind the artistry. Organisers have planned interactive sessions to raise awareness about the cultural and historical relevance of these art forms.

Promoting Rural Artisans and Cultural Exchange

The event is designed as a platform for rural artisans to gain exposure and opportunities for market linkages. It also serves to encourage cultural exchange by showcasing Odisha’s heritage outside of the state. Officials involved in organizing the fair have noted that such initiatives support both cultural preservation and economic development, particularly by providing direct access to urban markets for traditional makers.

Location and Visitor Information

The mela is being held at a dedicated venue equipped to accommodate food stalls, craft exhibits, and performance areas. Entry is open to the public, and organisers have made arrangements for safety, hygiene, and accessibility. The event is expected to attract a significant number of visitors over the three days, including tourists, residents, and craft enthusiasts.
