Firefight erupts along India–Myanmar border in Manipur; Operations ongoing

The CSR Journal Magazine

A fierce gunfight broke out between Assam Rifles personnel and militants near the India–Myanmar border in Manipur on Friday morning, officials confirmed. Security forces continue to engage the militants as the operation remains underway.

According to a Defence spokesperson, an Assam Rifles patrol team was ambushed without warning. Troops responded with “controlled and cautious fire” to avoid civilian casualties, while additional reinforcements were immediately deployed to the area.

Police officials acknowledged the incident, though detailed reports are still awaited. Manipur’s 398-km unfenced border with Myanmar has long remained vulnerable to militant infiltration, cross-border crime and drug trafficking.

Six arrested in crackdowns across Imphal valley

In coordinated joint operations over the past 24 hours, security forces arrested six individuals across Imphal East and Imphal West districts, including five cadres of the proscribed Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP).

Police said the group had been extorting money from the public, contractors, government workers, petrol pumps, private schools and government colleges.
One of the arrested, Khulem Robindro Singh (36), is suspected of recruiting youths into the banned outfit.

In another operation, security forces apprehended Yumnam Chandra Singh (42), also known as Baby, from his residence in Imphal East. Two high-power 36 HE grenades, a mobile phone and an Aadhaar card were seized during the raid.

Major anti-militancy measures intensified

Security agencies are carrying out widespread crackdowns across the state, including search operations and area domination in vulnerable and mixed-population localities. A total of 115 checkpoints have been set up in hill and valley districts to intercept militant movement and suspicious vehicles. Escorts for trucks transporting essential commodities along the Imphal–Jiribam National Highway (NH-37) continue to operate under strict security, particularly through sensitive stretches.

Manipur Police urged citizens to remain vigilant and avoid sharing unverified content circulating online. “The authenticity of any video or audio clip may be verified with the Central Control Room. Uploading or circulating fake content will invite legal action,” the police cautioned.
