A case has been registered against Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra following her inflammatory statement about Union Home Minister Amit Shah, where she allegedly asserted that “his head should be cut off and put on the table.” The complaint was lodged at Mana Camp Police Station in Raipur, filed by local resident Gopal Samanto, who accused Moitra of insulting democratic institutions, inciting hatred, and threatening national unity.
Expressing his dismay, Samanto said, “I filed the complaint with a very heavy heart. I come from the same community as her and it is an insult to the entire community when she talks so embarrassingly wrong about the home minister. The purpose of this complaint is to ensure that she gets punished and her Parliament membership is revoked.”
The FIR brings charges under Sections 196 and 197 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita—pertaining to promotion of enmity between groups and statements damaging to national integration based on her remarks during a media interaction in Nadia, West Bengal.
Mahua Moitra Booked for Controversial Amit Shah Remark
During that appearance, Moitra sharply criticised Shah’s response to infiltration from Bangladesh, stating that if he could not address the issue, “the first thing you should do is cut Amit Shah’s head and put it on your table.” She insisted that border security falls under his domain and he should not deflect blame.
The BJP reacted swiftly and harshly. Party officials likened Moitra’s language to extremist rhetoric, calling it “Talibani” and “ISIS-style,” while also denouncing it as an affront to Indian democratic norms.
Unfazed, Moitra responded with satire. She mocked the BJP’s outrage, saying she was amused by their “leaping and jumping.” She also launched into a critique of the party’s claims over the “Sanatani vote” in Bengal and admonished them for lacking familiarity with Bengali language and literature. “If you understood Bengali language and literature even a little, you would know what beheading means. You would know what ‘thump with a stick and make it cold’ means,” she said, quoting from Sukumar Ray’s poem Bigyaan‑Sikkha (Science Education), in which a scientist examines a head. She added later, “Keep your heads calm so they aren’t cut off. Do a little Sukumar Ray.”
Moitra’s Remark Sparks Fear Among Mana Camp Refugees
The case has also created unease in Raipur’s Mana Camp, home to refugees who arrived in 1971. The complainant said Moitra’s remarks had caused fear among the community there.
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai joined the criticism, calling the MP’s words a “serious criminal act” and urged TMC head Mamata Banerjee to either discipline Moitra or issue an apology.
Meanwhile, the controversy has reopened old fault lines between the BJP and TMC over infiltration from Bangladesh a politically charged issue. Moitra also used the opportunity to accuse the Modi government of harming India’s relationship with Bangladesh, framing it as part of a broader critique of the BJP.
