Fifteen US Military Aircraft Exit Spain Bases After Madrid Bars Use in Iran Conflict

The CSR Journal Magazine

Recent satellite tracking data indicated that fifteen US military aircraft have vacated the Rota and Moron bases located in southern Spain. This move follows the initiation of strikes on Iran by the US and Israel over the weekend. Flight tracking services reported that several of these aircraft landed at Ramstein Air Base in Germany.

Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares confirmed the nation’s stance, stating that Spain would not permit the use of its military facilities for any operation against Iran, a position aligned with Spain’s condemnation of these attacks. “Spanish bases are not being used for this operation, and they will not be used for anything that is not included in the agreement with the United States or contravenes the Charter of the United Nations,” Albares articulated in an interview with a local broadcaster.

In addition to the aircraft departing for Germany, tracking data showed that several aerial refueling tankers, including the Boeing KC-135 “Stratotanker,” which had been permanently stationed in Spain, were among those that left the Moron airbase. Specifically, nine of these tankers departed from Moron toward Germany on Sunday, while two other flights from Rota, a naval base that includes an airfield, headed towards southern France. The routing details for four additional flights departing from Rota were not publicly available.

The political landscape surrounding this issue reflects complexities as Spain continues to assert its autonomy in foreign policy. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, representing the Socialist party, has characterized the US-Israeli military actions as problematic, positioning Spain as somewhat of an outlier among Western nations. This development could potentially exacerbate tensions with Washington.

While countries like Britain initially refrained from permitting the use of their military facilities for operations against Iran, Prime Minister Keir Starmer subsequently authorized such use on the basis of “collective self-defense.” This contrast in approach may further highlight Spain’s distinct foreign policy stance compared to its allies.

Despite the departure of US aircraft, Spain maintains that its military bases will follow established protocols, remaining aligned with international law and agreements with the United States. The Spanish government continues to underscore its commitment to sovereignty amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions, reinforcing its position on military engagement in distant conflicts.
